Re: Petra Kvitova News and Articles

I've just read the article and I don't have the same opinion like you. I think that she talks like this mainly because the first half of the year was disaster and her goals for this year really weren't as high as they might be if she knew she would be able to play like this for longer period of time. I also didn't get the impression that she thinks Fed Cup is more than the YEC (she definitely didn't compare them or didn't say what she likes more in this interview).

However, it has been always questionable if she wants to be the best of the bests or if she can adjust her goals if she radically improves her level of play during the season.

Petra Kvitová * Tomáš Berdych * Lucie Šafářová * BZS * Angie Kerber
Karolína Plíšková * Andy Murray * Roger Federer * Tommy Haas
Radek Štěpánek * Leander Paes ** Andrea Hlaváčková & Lucie Hradecká
And other Czech Davis Cup and Fed Cup team members

Talking to press didnt bring any fruits to anybody. The less you talk, the more time to train you have. And Petra follows this rule (fortunatelly). Genie or Sharpie have their own world and I am pretty glad, the one of Petra is quite different.

Plus this is a good strategy, thats for sure. The fewer goals to achieve you declare to have in the press, the less stressed youll be while being confronted with what you said before...

A player of her calibre should have a desire to conquer the Tour, don't you think? She also gives FED Cup a slight preference to the YEC. I would rather see her win the YEC than FED Cup, preferably both of course.
Foreign fans are again and again surprised by the importance of FedCup for Petra so let me explain a bit

It's basically the only time during the season she can play live in front of her home crowd.

The competition is unique, as you play not only for yourself, but also for your team and your country and the FedCup week is a nice break of the tournament routine. You are part of sth bigger, not just an individual tennis player.

Most FedCup semis on the Czech soil attract several thousands of fans and the FedCup final crowd will be as big as during a slam final, around 15,000 people. This easily beats New Haven or Wuhan finals in terms of atmosphere. Not to mention you play in front of your home crowd, who supports you during every point. This 'perk' is really hard to beat.

FedCup matches are attended by Petra's and other player's relatives, friends, colleagues, etc. and the players thus have an extra motivation to play well.

In small countries like Czech Republic, winning any national competition is a big event and these wins are highly regarded. Small countries obviously do not win in national team competitions that often as US, Russia or China, where these wins are kind of taken for granted.

There is also a big legacy of past FedCup victories by Navratilova, Mandlikova, Sukova etc. and the team around Petra proudly continues this legacy.

Hope this helps a bit

Thanks! This was super interesting! I really appreciate learning about the Czech Republic from you guys. Sounds like an awesome place. (Except for this mafia that everyone keeps talking about)

Glad it was helpful to you. As for the mafia thing, it's not that bad. In a small, landlocked country you can't avoid significant interpersonal or intercompany connections (i.e. everybody knows everybody). I wouldn't call it mafia

Re: Petra Kvitova News and Articles

Petra's reason for pulling out of Moscow was a right hamstring injury I assuming is the same injury since RG.

Re: Petra Kvitova News and Articles

Im not sure, I think Petra is very honest about her injuries, she rarely withdraws from tournaments, gives w/o and never retired from a match. Apparently she is carrying this hamstring injury for awhile now.

Last year she had back problems

and her serve speed maybe? Her serve was a disaster at the US Open.

oh yea, that too for sure...i thought it looked pretty good at wuhan...the avg pace she was getting on both first and second serves was pretty insane...but then it decreased a lot during beijing...and a lot of first serves were dumped in the net

Petra is healthy, she had to withdraw from Moscow = she had to find any excuse allowing her not to play. I can guarantee, Moscows withdrawal has nothing to do with her health, she is OK.

Re: Petra Kvitova News and Articles

According to Polish sport press Petra's new boyfriend is Radek Meidl - hockeyplayer from Polish club Polonia Bytom
Yesterday she went from Ostrava to Katowice to watch him playing against Naprzod Janow. Radek's team lost.
