Well, this was a truly shitty setback, but there is no question her actual game is in the best "early season" shape we have seen since her comeback. Plus, she already has a doubles titles which she truly earned with some outstanding play.
Of course, I want to rake her over the coals, but am trying to change my ways and be less cynical/critical. Or at least less flippant and smart-assy. Or whatever.
Mirjana "had" this match ... She was in full control. With a 110-115 MPH serve, there should be no question of serving it out against a run-of-the-mill like Cepelova.
Mirjana has the game to truly take out almost anybody. Graf was correct all those years ago. When Steffi Graf (woman of few words or uttered insights says something, it merits attention). Graf saw that Lucic was not only a world-class talent, but a multiple Grand Slam talent ... a No. 1 champion-class talent.
We all know what brought her down, and who could blame her. The fact is that she has been trying to regain some of that brilliance late in her career, frankly against the odds, with a fragile psyche (considering how she did not get the nurturing and support worthy of her talent for so long). Still, she has fought bravely to this cusp of the Top 100 and is clinging there, despite the fact that she has the fitness and power of a Top 10 player, still.
Her mental approach is her downfall, and she just has not had world-class coaching, I guess until Prpic came on board (if he is still on board). The biggest difference I see between teen Lucic and 2013 Lucic (aside from fitness) is that teen Lucic had one hell of a killer instinct. She hit a stroke not just to "hit hard" but to *punish* the girl on the other side of the net. If the ball didn't go in back then, she just moved on to the next point.
Now, she's battling against her own self far too often, and it has robbed her of what should be a solid Top 30-40 spot (at least), in my opinion.
You know, Navratilova was a mental mess to end all mental messes, and relatively late in her own career, she hired shrinks even for her dogs to get the head-shit out of her game.
Mirjana will not be showing "weakness" by consulting a sports psych. and availing herself of a potentially huge key that could unlock the fabulous game that is just waiting to break free and terrorize the tour.
Hope she gets a LL spot, but we'll see her here in dubs, at least.
