2013 - 8/8 - Andi's 2013 - Season Review & Outlook - Winter Discussion Thread

January

Hopman Cup
RR - Ashleigh Barty def. Andrea Petkovic 4-6 ret (knee)
She injured herself in the first set of tennis of the year at Hopman Cup. Let's not talk about it any further.
________________________________________________

February

Still sidelined by her injury sustained in Perth she travelled to Las Vegas to prepare for the US Open Hard Court tournaments of Indian Wells and Miami.
________________________________________________

March

BNP Paribas Open - Indian Wells, USA
QR1 - Andrea Petkovic def. Yulia Putintseva 6-0 6-2
QR2 - Monica Puig def. Andrea Petkovic 7-6 6-3
Sony Open - Miami, USA
R1 - Andrea Petkovic def. Bojana Jovanovski 6-3 6-1
R2 - Andrea Petkovic def. Marion Bartoli 6-3 4-1 ret.

R3 - Ajla Tomljanovicdef. Andrea Petkovic 0-6 6-3 7-6
She deliberately took only a Q WC into Indian Wells to get some matches done and successfully won her match of her 3rd comeback within 11 months before falling to Monica Puig. In Miami she went for the Main Draw WC instead and it paid off: She got a straightforward win over Jovanovski and was on her way to routining #11 Bartoli when Bartoli suddenly retired 2 games from defeat. In the 3rd round she looked well on her way to her first Quarterfinal of the final when, after serving a bagel in the first set, suddenly the wheels came off and she lost in 3 sets to a player then ranked around #240.

April

Family Circle Cup - Charleston, USA
R1 - Andrea Petkovic def. Taylor Townsend 6-3 6-0
R2 - Andrea Petkovic def. Vania King 7-5 6-4

R3 - Caroline Wozniacki def. Andrea Petkovic W/O (thigh)
Porsche Tennis Grand Prix - Stuttgart, Germany
R1 - Ana Ivanovic def. Andrea Petkovic 6-3 6-2
April saw relatively little action from Andi. In Charleston (again a MD WC) she won in straight sets against Townsend and King before giving a Walkover to Wozniacki, a result of her new philosophy of being more careful with her body. In late April she took yet another WC, this time into the beloved Stuttgart tournament, where she lost pretty decisively to an in-form Ivanovic.

May

Mutua Madrid Open - Madrid, Spain
QR1 - Bethanie Mattek-Sands def. Andrea Petkovic 6-3 7-5
French Open - Paris, France
QR1 - Andrea Petkovic def. Nadiya Kichenok 6-4 6-4
QR2 - Yi-Miao Zhou def. Andrea Petkovic 6-7 7-6 6-4
In May she played only 3 matches, losing to Mattek-Sands (who had just had a run to the Stuttgart SF) in the Madrid Q and then losing in the 2nd round of Qualifying for Roland Garros to a player nobody has ever heard of. Probably the lowest point of her season and Andrea later said (in her well-known slightly over-dramatic style) that she contemplated retirement.

June

ITF Marseille
R1 - Andrea Petkovic def. Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-2 7-5
R2 - Andrea Petkovic def. Mathilde Johansson 6-3 6-4
QF - Andrea Petkovic def. Paula Ormaechea 6-1 6-3
SF - Andrea Petkovic def. Monica Puig 6-0 6-0
F - Andrea Petkovic def. Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-4 6-2
Nürnberger Versicherungscup - Nuremberg, Germany
R1 - Andrea Petkovic def. Sofia Arvidsson 6-3 6-2
R2 - Andrea Petkovic def. Julia Görges 6-1 7-5
QF - Andrea Petkovic def. Annika Beck 4-6 6-3 7-5
SF - Andrea Petkovic def. Jelena Jankovic 6-4 6-3

F - Simona Halep def. Andrea Petkovic 6-3 6-3
Wimbledon - London, UK
R1 - Andrea Petkovic def. Pauline Parmentier 6-3 6-2
R2 - Sloane Stephens def. Andrea Petkovic 7-6 2-6 8-6
Instead of retiring she got a late WC into the ITF 100k in Marseille, where she completed a flawless run to the title without dropping a set (even though she played much tougher opposition than in the FO Q), in the process dishing out a double-bagel to Monica Puig. In Nuremberg she continued her success, first easily beating the slumping Arvidsson and Görges before winning a close encounter with another fellow countrywoman, Annika Beck. In the semis she moved past JJ but her dream run of 9 matches in a row with only 1 lost set was stopped by a red-hot Simona Halep who played flawless tennis and won the first of her 4 titles this year. In Wimbledon she breezed past Parmentier before losing a match to Sloane "Witch" "Bibi Bocklos" Stephens that she should never-ever lose. A disputed call derailed her in the first set tiebreak and even though she won the 2nd set she eventually fell victim to Stephen's pushing in the 14th game of the final set.

July

NÜRNBERGER Gastein Ladies - Bad Gastein, Austria
R1 - Petra Martic def. Andrea Petkovic 6-7 7-5 6-3
Citi Open - Washington, USA
R1 - Andrea Petkovic def. Jessica Pegula 6-2 7-5
R2 - Andrea Petkovic def. Mona Barthel 6-2 6-2
QF - Andrea Petkovic def. Paula Ormaechea 4-6 6-1 6-3
SF - Andrea Petkovic def. Alize Cornet 7-5 6-3

F - Magdalena Rybarikova def. Andrea Petkovic 6-4 7-6
Andrea caught a virus in Bad Gastein, causing her loss in the first round here as well as her withdrawal from Baku. Recovered and on another continent she found herself in much better shape, reaching her 2nd WTA final of the year - that she lost in straight sets after going up 4-0 in the first set. It was that kind of match.

________________________________________________

August

Western & Southern Open - Cincinnati, USA
QR1 - Andrea Petkovic def. Maria Sanchez 6-0 6-0
QR2 - Andrea Petkovic def. Karolina Pliskova 7-5 6-2
R1 - Andrea Petkovic def. Daniela Hantuchova 2-6 6-4 6-1

R2 - Roberta Vinci def. Andrea Perkovic 6-4 6-7 6-3
US Open - New York, USA
R1 - Bojana Jovanovski def. Andrea Petkovic 6-2 6-4
Because of her final run in Washington she wasn't able to play Q in Toronto, giving her a week off. In Cincinnati she finally managed to fight her way through qualies (just as she had reached a ranking that didn't require her to play Q anymore) before falling to Top 15-player Vinci in the 2nd round. Looking in good shape she then inexplicably lost in the first round of the US Open to a heavily slumping Jovanovski.

________________________________________________

September

KDB Korea Open - Seoul, Korea
R1 - Francesca Schiavone def. Andrea Petkovic 6-1 2-6 6-4
Toray Pan Pacific Open - Tokyo, Japan
R1 - Andrea Petkovic def. Elena Vesnina 4-6 7-6 6-4
R2 - Simona Halep def. Andrea Petkovic 7-6 6-3
China Open - Beijing, China
R1 - Andrea Petkovic def. Victoria Azarenka 6-4 2-6 6-4
R2 - Andrea Petkovic def. Svetlana Kuznetsova 4-6 6-4 6-1

R3 - Lucie Safarova def. Andrea Petkovic 6-4 6-7 7-6
The Asian month had mixed results for Andrea, a disappointing loss to Schiavone in Korea, another loss to Halep in Tokyo but then a good week in Beijing, where she first beat world #2 Azarenka, then 2-time slam champion Kuznetsova before falling to an extremely well-playing Safarova in the 3rd round in one of the best WTA matches of the year (except for the final set tiebreak, that is..).

________________________________________________

October

Generali Ladies - Linz, Austria
R1 - Andrea Petkovic def. Yvonne Meusburger 6-3 7-5
R2 - Sloane Stephens def. Andrea Petkovic 7-6 4-6 6-3
BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open - Luxembourg
R1 - Andrea Petkovic def. Genie Bouchard 2-6 7-5 6-1
R2 - Karin Knapp def. Andrea Petkovic 7-5 7-5
Another unneccessary loss to Stephens, again after losing a first set that she should have won. In her final tournament of the year, she had to play the promising youngster Genie Bouchard in the first round and after a terrible set and a half rallied (with a little help from Bouchard's jet lag kicking in) to win it from 2-6 1-4* down. In the 2nd round she continued to play terrible and lost to Knapp in what was the last match of the year for her.

________________________________________________

Off-Season

After her well-earned vacation she'll do the first part of her off-season together with Angie Kerber at the Schüttler/Waske-academy again and will then travel to Doha for final preparations. Her coach has hinted that her first tournament in 2014 might be Shenzen.

________________________________________________

Outlook

It's looking pretty good. She obviously has no points to defend in the first 2 months of the year and even then only a few until the 2nd week of the French Open (when she won Marseille this year). So she's in a very good position to be seeded at Roland Garros, which would make defending the heavy load of points in the following weeks a lot easier.

Re: Andi's 2013 - Season Review & Outlook - Winter Discussion Thread

Great review Katja! Sometimes the low points, or those matches that should have been won, are the ones that stick in memory, but when reviewing the entire season, Andi achieved a tremendous comeback. I understand the desire not to dwell on injury, but I have the deepest admiration for her coming back from multiple injuries to the same knee, and being able to conquer the fear of re-injury (that's probably something she has to do every time she steps on court). From a ranking of 143 to 40--such an awesome accomplishment!

Going forward--I really hope Petko keeps her amazing magical orange shoes, and if she has to sacrifice some racquets with the occasional bashing ritual to appease the tennis gods, so be it!

Petko is going to play Brisbane first! She said this in an interview in the sport magazine kicker.

That might be a tight fit to get in directly. Initial last direct acceptance last year was #46 - if you take away her Pune points as of right now Petko would be ranked: #46.

Not really sure if that's the best strategy, either. Could you give us a full quote PetkoFan or post a summary in the articles thread?

honestly, i would laugh if she has to play Qualies

German girls have no clue how to vulture points
in Shenzhen she would even had a chance to be seeded
2013 the #8 seed was #56

I don't know what's the problem. She's searching confrontation with the best players, she has to beat them, if she wants to go back to the top.

Vulturing points is not Petkos style, she's back in position to play those tournaments.

Maybe we shouldn't blame her. I'm totally confused right now. My friend just asked her coach Popovic about this. According to Popovic,"Shenzhen didn't want to bring Andrea", and he didn't explain more.

Hmm, so Shenzhen wasn't willing to pay for her appearance? Did he really say it like that?

Re: Andi's 2013 - Season Review & Outlook - Winter Discussion Thread

I wouldn't particularly want to go to Shenzhen if I didn't have to tbh. It means a sizeable trip to Australia the next week, and it's not like it's some soft international. Li is playing (as is Errani), there's no easy points being given out here. If I wanted to play a weaker tournament I'd go to Auckland, which as of now looks a softer field.

I think she should get into Brisbane. It's what? 24 direct entries. At least 10 players ranked above her are already accounted for in Hopman Cup, Auckland and Shenzhen, and I'm sure more will fill out these draws. She'll probably find it tougher to get into Sydney the next week if that's what she's trying to do.

Re: Andi's 2013 - Season Review & Outlook - Winter Discussion Thread

Yeah, the trip is pretty long to Australia, that's true. I guess rolling the dice and hoping for the best in Brisbane probably will work out, but then she has to plan a tournament for the next week, too, because the danger of meeting a very tough R1 opponent is quite high there and going into the AO with just one competitive match isn't too good.

She basically has no chance of getting into Sydney directly, so I doubt that she'll play there (given how much she struggled in Q this year) - Hobart is a nice option for that week if she wants to play then.
