St. Petersburg Qualifying

(1)Petkovic v Kerkhove
(wc)Pogrebnyak v Haas
Lykina v Komardina
Sharipova v (8)Tig

Must be ages since Petko's last qualifying?

Re: Petko's 2017 - February and March

She was playing qualifying rounds after her injuries in 2013.Who can forget her loss to Miao in Roland Garros...

Since she's 1 seed does it mean she'll be in if she makes to 3rd round even if she loses? As Lucky Loser i mean.

Re: Petko's 2017 - February and March

Thanks for sharing! Glad to see her playing some low level events, she needs to retrieve her level there. And if she couldn't, everything should be ended.
As for the quailies, I doubt whether she could win 3 matches in a row, sorry. When was the last time she made it?

She won after another of her usual slow starts..Draw is out and there is no Lucky Loser, meaning she has to win both her next matches, even though i dont see how Venus could play there(she's still in the draw)

7-6 6-1 vs Kerkhove

Well, we knew her form wasn't great, so I'm just happy she somehow got the win. Still hoping that she might get some confidence from winning these Q matches.

Venus will most likely withdraw, she probably had not enough time to think about a withdrawal yet But I'm 100% sure we won't see her here so a LL will be in. However, the WTA does not have the rule anymore that the highest ranked Q loser gets in immediately, I think nowadays they draw which one of the two highest q losers get in to avoid tanking. So to be 100% safe in, Andrea has to beat her next two opponents.

According to the Resultina App Kerkhove had even one Setpoint

Right now i agree on RickZ, it's hard to believe she can win 3 Matches in a row
But i hope she prove us wrong

Yeah she was in a world of trouble in the first set. Broken twice early before slowly clawing her way back on top.

Quite frankly her lead-up to this opening qualifier probably wasn't the most ideal. She only finished in Australia on Tuesday and I think she spent some time in Germany before jumping into St Petersburg.

Probably not quite used to the conditions (and time-zone!) yet. But watching her live at the Australian Open, she seems to be in a good headspace.

Best wishes to Andrea!

A win is a win, though her form still seemed to be worrisome.

Re: Petko's 2017 - February and March

Up against world number 201 Anastasiya Komardina tomorrow. Should expect a win, as long as she plays around the level she played today.

Petko still has her weapons - she can out muscle just about anybody on tour (her record against Muguruza is a testament to that). I feel like her movement has improved slightly over the off-season as well, and her mental game is beginning to mature well.

If she can just find a way to work around her below-average serve (like Kerber), I really feel like she could contend for a top spot in the rankings. Obviously her defence isn't quite on Angie's level, but her stroke-play when switched on looks world class - even against Strycova in 2R.

Above all else though, I hope she continues to enjoy her time on tour just as much as we enjoy watching her play. She deserves it.

Re: Petko's 2017 - February and March

Happy that she won, Haas is a good defender so I was a bit worried if Petko would be able to stay calm and patient

Final Q-round will be against Komardina tomorrow.

Maybe not the worst thing that she gets a few 'easy' matches here.

Re: Petko's 2017 - February and March

I would deem it as a great "success" if she qualified into the main draw today.

Re: Petko's 2017 - February and March

Comfortable, but by no means comprehensive. She will probably have to step it up a fair bit if she wants to progress deep into the draw but fantastic to see her getting a few wins under her belt nonetheless.

Auf geht's!
