Will be driving in the (early) morning of the 22nd from central Florida, straight to the parking lot, hopefully by 9AM, depending on traffic. Last year I timed it just right--Aravane was the very first player I saw after walking through the gate....
As for getting downtown from Ft. Lauderdale, I'm not from the area, so perhaps someone else would be able to give you better advice, but I can tell you that there's basically two direct routes--I95 and the Florida Turnpike. 95 is the most convenient--it's right next to the airport, but depending on when your flight gets in, it could be a traffic nightmare, as it is the main artery down to Miami. Going west to the turnpike and then down to Miami might save some time. You could do a Mapquest search if you know your hotel/condo address from the airport and see what Mapquest recommends time-wise.
Hopefully someone local will have more insight for you.
my questions are:
- To use the shuttle to get to the tournament site, do we have to stay at their hotel? I rented a place near one of the big hotel and there is a shuttle leaving from there;
- I can't find any shuttle from Fortlauderdale airport to downtown Miami and it's quite strange I think. They offer rides to Port or to South beach. What do you think is the best idea to get there? I'm not renting a car for the first few days.
I went last year, the parking/shuttle system was a nightmare the first day I went, luckily it got better. I LOVED this event, wish I were going down there again.
Really? That's too bad. In all the time I've been going, I've never had a problem with the parking/shuttle. As a matter of fact, I think it's actually quite ingenious the way they have it set up on Virginia Key, considering the amount of people they have to move in and out of there each day, especially with the late arriving crowd, and the number of people who come in on that first weekend. Of course, I will say that as an "eager beaver" I do tend to get there extremely early and leave extremely late, so I probably miss any of the problems that do occur. But early and late, it seems to run flawlessly.
We're going on Saturday the 26th - looking forward to it! Hope the weather is good... we are coming in off a cruise that morning and heading over to the tournament... leaving LATE that night back to Nashville!
You're going to have a long and interesting day, lol. Not sure how long the cruise disembarking will take, or when you'll get to the tournament, but I've heard that can take awhile. Anyway, hope you have fun! It will be crowded, but hopefully the weather will be good and you'll to see some good matches.
From FLL to Miami:
You can take de TRI RAIL train from "Fort Lauderdale Airport Station" (the station is close to the airport, and they provide a free shuttle to bring you there (on the Arrivals Level)).
The TRI RAIL can bring you up to MIAMI AIRPORT STATION. The train ride is about 40 minutes and it cost 3$.
From there, you can take a taxi, wich is not to far from downtown Miami (about 20$). I've been taking this train for five years when arriving in FLL, and it works pretty well.
