Consistent toss/2nd serve?

Hi all,

I'm having problems with my toss which causes me to lose all confidence on my serve. Besides, my second serve wasn't as reliable in the first place, resulting in numerous double faults. Can someone please give me some tips on how to do a consistent ball toss (for first and second serve) and maybe some advice on 2nd serves?

Re: Consistent toss/2nd serve?

I have a similar problem. I actually have a good toss, because I am slightly ambidextrous and I am therefore left-handed with ball throwing. (even if it is not a tennis ball) I have trouble with hitting a consistent 2nd serve though, because I don't really know how to slow down from my 1st serve, but I usually slow down too much and it ends up in the net

Re: Consistent toss/2nd serve?

I have problems with my toss too. It's not consistent. But I don't have a problem with placement or speed when I get it right. I can't describe it, it just comes naturally.

But the toss is definitely a problem. I try to practise it as much as I can even when I'm not playing tennis.

Re: Consistent toss/2nd serve?

It really depends what your toss is like & what the major issue is (too high or too low of a ball toss, being in sync, toss goes forward back left right etc.). Could you be more specific about the problem with your ball toss?

Re: Consistent toss/2nd serve?

Look at Ana Ivanovic and you'll understand my problem.
I know I'm supposed to toss the ball a bit in front and around the 1 o'clock mark. However, it just drifts everywhere; behind, right left, too front etc.
Sometimes, I catch my toss when it goes haywire. But it's embarassing as I have to keep apologizing for catching my toss.

Re: Consistent toss/2nd serve?

Put your racquet on the ground in front of you and a bit to the right if you're left handed.

Practice your ball toss without holding the racquet, and work on getting the ball to land on the racquet.

Re: Consistent toss/2nd serve?

The ball toss and racquet head speed should be exactly the same with the first and second serves.

The things that should change are your grip and the angle of the racquet hitting the ball.

Re: Consistent toss/2nd serve?

i did change the grip but most of my second serves go long.
and I don't want to resort to tapping my serve in. :/

How are you holding the ball? Have it in your fingertips & make sure you release it as late as possible. It's a place up rather than a toss.

If it's that wild I'd guess you're throwing it.

Not strictly true, but good advice nonetheless. Too many people decelerate on their 2nd serve.

Are you missing it long or in the net, wateva?

Could someone please tell me why I can't start my own thread? It says I don't have the authorisation to do it...

It's mostly long. I know I need to accelerate, but I think because of my wild tosses, I try to overcompensate, leading the long 2nd serves...
And thanks for the toss advice!
