What tricks do you use to concentrate more?

Mines are trying to eliminate the surroundings of the tennis court from my mind and subsequently focusing on the court, focusing on my footwork and racquethead speed (learnt that from Rennae Stubbs) and thinking of my opponent as some kind of animated mannequin with a particular game style

Yours?

The belief that man is an irresolute creature pulled this way and that by two forces of equal strength, alternately winning and losing the battle for his soul; the conviction that human life is nothing more than an uncertain struggle between heaven and hell; the faith in two opposed entities, Satan and Christ - all this was bound to engender those internal discords in which the mind, excited by the incessant fighting, stimulated as it were by the constant promises and threats, ends up by giving in and prostitutes itself to whichever of the two combatants has been more obstinate in its pursuit. Life isn't black and white, it's gold.

Re: What tricks do you use to concentrate more?

I only tend to lose concentration when returning, because I'm not playing at my own rhythm. So I have a couple of things that I do.

I do the same as you with my footwork, especially really concentrating on my weight going forward through the shot - for some reason this helps. I've found thinking about my swing (i.e. racquet speed) has the opposite effect as I second guess myself and either start to under hit or overhit.

It's kind of hard to describe but another thing that sometimes works for me is to get into position for the return before the opponent is ready to serve and just stand still and wait. Jumping up and down or turning my back and walking around, etc. just distracts me. Somehow this makes me feel that things are on my own terms and I have nothing else to do but concentrate on the coming serve.

I agree, I do that too.

Many people adjust their strings, but that hurts my fingers too much after a while.

Sometimes I don't move AT ALL, until the guy starts his service motion.

Remember it's not Wimbledon and to always go for my shots since I have nothing on the line.

I remind myself to just be consistent and get over ball back relatively deep, as against most opponents I can outlast them in long rallies!

Re: What tricks do you use to concentrate more?

I sing a song in my head, and when I really need to assess, tell myself to move my feet and swing through the ball. That usually takes care of most things, particularly if I focus on moving.

Re: What tricks do you use to concentrate more?

I try to think about nothing. I just keep reminding myself:

- eyes on the ball
- small steps
- recover, rinse, and repeat.

I used to try and comentate in my head about my performance, or try to calculate how many points, set points, break points, etc.

I just try to stay as "quiet" in my head as I can so I can hear every noise the ball and racquets make.
