Welcome to the 2nd stop on the VWTT circuit: The Tier II, $585,000 Adidas International. The adidas International is one of the oldest tennis tournaments on the world circuit, being played since 1885. In that time, the game's greatest players have through the ages thrilled crowds and strived to add their name to the list immortals on the cherished Sydney trophy.

The NSW championships moved to White City in 1922 (21 October) and saw many of the game's legends win the title including Jack Crawford, Lew Hoad, Ken Rosewall, Rod Laver, John Newcombe, Pete Sampras, Margaret Court, and Evonne Goolagong.

Renamed the adidas International in 1996, the event was played for the last time at White City in January, 1999. 2000 marked the debut for the Sydney International Tennis Centre and the adidas International 2000 was the first major event to be played at the new site.

More tennis history was created in 2001 when the adidas International became the first tournament in the Open-era that the top two seeds were featured in the final of every event - men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles.
The adidas International is now the key lead up event to the Australian Open, and all players are competing for a top seeding. Its position in the tennis calender ensures the world's best players will get the rigorous preparation they require for the year's first Grand Slam.

Heading the field at this year's Adidas International is last week's Thalgo Australian champ, Jelena Dokic. Some of the other top players competeting this week include last year's champion, Martina Hingis; 2000 Champion, Amelie Mauresmo.

Excellent tourni-intro Jeff!

Meghann is just a bit worried about her second QF clash with Sabatini...perhaps revenge for last week will be had! And the doubles draw against last week's champions ....but c'mon Monica, let's show 'um our stuff!

I think you should put ASV in that story, too. She's making her debut!

Croat, Majoli is only playing qualifying because that just happened to be when I drew her name for the draw. I have decided not to implement seedings until after this week's Adidas International. I will start seeding players and will post the Rankings after this tournament. The only players that I put in seeding positions this week are Jelena Dokic and Gabriela Sabatini. The rest were just drawn randomly.
