Re: Shahar 2011 Cheering Thread

Another thrilling and courageous victory it is, but she needs to think of what's ahead of her here, not top 10 implications; those are for the media and us, her fans.

Last year all those deep runs were stopped by top players (WS, Henin, Woz and JJ).
Suddenly with Kim's retirement, she's the highest seed left in the bottom half!
Moreover, not only she's more consistent and experienced than Wickmayer (though the Belgian is a dangerous player and a future top-tenner imo), she's 12-3 combined against the possible SF opponents, Bartoli and Ivanovic.
Opportunities such as this one don't present themselves often. The player she just beat took hers last year. Can Shahar do the same?

Re: Shahar 2011 Cheering Thread

It really depends on how she's holding up physically. 3 tough triple setters in a row are going to have an effect on her at some point. Hopefully she has enough gas left in the tank to take out Yanina, it will be tough but if she could make it to the QF, who knows, maybe she'll get lucky and will face Marion.

Meanwhile here's a tweet from Shahar:
@shaharpeer shahar peer

Re: Shahar 2011 Cheering Thread

Hopefully Sharpova will lose to Peng or in the semies and Marion will lose to Wickmayer so shahar will be top 10er

Re: Shahar 2011 Cheering Thread

Wozniacki will most likely have her with Sharpova and I doubt Marion will beat Yanina. What round did Shahar reach last year in Miami? Was is it R2 or R3?

Re: Shahar 2011 Cheering Thread

R3 (nearly got double-bageled by Kim). Of course with a R1 bye.
Woz should beat Pova, but the other semi is a toss-up.

Re: Shahar 2011 Cheering Thread

Shahar didn't reach the coveted #10 spot.
She currently stands at #11.

I think it's better this way, that she has to win to get to top 10 and not that she will get it because other players lost.

Re: Shahar 2011 Cheering Thread

So is Shahar 11 with both Williams sisters behind her in rankings now? So she will be the 11th seed?

Venus is still #9
so I expect Shahar will be the 10th seed

The ranking system works both way. It's not enough to win, others need to loose.

If you win enough, you don't depend on others to lose (e.g. Caro)

Shahar's section in Miami:

Peer [10] - bye
Pervak [Q] vs Medina Garrigues
Dulko vs Vesnina
Wickmayer [23] - bye

Zakopalova [32] - bye
Baltacha vs Bammer
Jovanovski vs Niculescu
Jankovic [6] - bye

Not a very good draw. Really could have done better for R3 than to get Yanina again out of all possible 17-32 seeds.
Hopefully she can rise to the occasion and make the top 10 on her own.

In that regard I have to add that had Bartoli lost her semi last week, I think Shahar would have set a record for the least ranking points for a top 10 player... Adjusted for the '09 doubling and 16 best instead of 17 best, she had more points in '07 when she was #15 with her two major QFs.

Re: Shahar 2011 Cheering Thread

Loosing to Anabel Medina Garrigues will certainly not bring her into top 10.
