Re: USO series 2009

Shahar lucky in Rogers Cup.
According to tourney site, Shahar entered the main draw, as last lowest ranked.
She will face a qualifier.

If she will not use this opportunity to improve her rankings, I don't know how she will at all.

Re: USO series 2009

No complaints, but whether it were rankings from one, two or six weeks ago used for this, in either case I really can't fathom how is she in the MD and e.g. Pavlyuchenkova, Dulko, MJMS etc. have to play qualies.

Edit: it turns out she got a WC - which puzzles me as to why isn't she listed as such in the draw - as a compensation for the Dubai visa incident. According to "Yediot" (Ynet article doesn't go into details) the WTA decided back then to give Shahar a Main Draw WC for an equivalent tournament, but she didn't need one until now.

Re: USO series 2009

Toronto R1: (WC) Peer d. (Q) Niculescu 6-4 4-6 7-6(4) (phew!)
A much needed win, avenging her doubles partner surprise loss

A beatable R2 opponent in the form of Schiavone (albeit the Italian has to be considered the favorite) - really a decent draw. Take advantage of it Shahar!

Re: USO series 2009

Didn't see it but I'm not surprised. Shahar matches up well with her.
Up next: Dementieva, against whom Shahar has taken a grand total of 9 games in their last 3 meeting No expectations here...

Shahar and Gisela has lost their STB by the score of 0-10 How many times did that happen before?

Actually a pretty encouraging loss from Shahar. She played Elena even for the match, and even won 4 more points than Elena. The second serve is still terrible, but her fighting spirit seems to be coming back. Also, I did see some improvement in her net game at times.

Re: USO series 2009

Yes, it was a good score. To take a top five player to three sets and have ad point at 4/4 was nice to see. Today's loss doesn't bother me too much (Pilot Pen) when you consider that yesterday she was in Canada and then just over 24 hours later she is in Conn. USA playing a first round Qual. match. The body can only take so much travel. I would have rather she not played this tournament. I think going into the US Open with the knowledge of taking Elena to three sets would have been good for her. Now with another very early loss the mindset is going to be much different.

Perhaps after the US Open it would be a good idea to rest, take some time out for herself and work towards January 2010.

Re: USO series 2009

Her play has been very spotty - I guess that's how one's ranking drops 50 spots in 2+ years. She doesn't have a horrible draw, so she has a chance to make some noise in NY - would be a good place to start turning things around.

Re: USO series 2009

It is so sad to see so few comments on her draw before a slam.
Both Szavay and (probably) CSN are slight favorites but beatable, however I was much more confident before the New Haven Q1 loss to Garbin.

Re: USO series 2009

Shahar beat Szavay in straights sets

Next up: CSN! Another player with great backhand.. and with forehand better than Szavay for sure.

Good news that Shahar played great and she won't lose CSN in that form, now all she needs to do is bring it to the match. Good luck Shahar

P.S Dudi just lost to Kim

Re: USO series 2009

Nice opening round win. Would be nice to string 3 or 4 of them together - get her ranking back moving in the right direction again. I hope she can do it!!
