Re: Julia Glushko

This week Julia is trying to defend her maiden 50K title, from Lexington (KY) last year.
A great report of a typical day at the office: $50,000 Lexington, KY (USA) 2013 | Jul 22 (Winner: Shelby Rogers)

With this kind of temperament and volatility, how can she ever expect to reach and stay in the top 100?

Re: Julia Glushko

It's not exactly unprecedented behavior in the WTA...
Reach the top 100 and stay there? It's almost a miracle we're talking seriously about the first part (very few players have done it at Julia's age), I'm not sure how realistic is the second.

It has to be said though that Julia had a long transition phase before she started beating top 200 players regularly, maybe it will happen with top 100 players too once she starts playing them more often.

Re: Julia Glushko

This week's bad news is that Julia couldn't defend her Vancouver 100K SF points (70) from last year - lost in two close sets to Kudryavtseva in R2 and will drop to about #140 in the rankings tomorrow.
(This is perhaps the weakest 100K out there. It has to be mentioned that last year Julia beat Keys in the QF and look where the young American is now.)

The good news is that this loss came just in time for Julia to enter Toronto P5 qualies, in which she scored one of her biggest wins to date: 6-3 5-7 7-5 over Christina McHale, the second top 100 win of her career (not counting Shahar in Israeli national champs).
For the 4th time in a month Julia saved MP!

As I said in GM, she never made a tour MD other than her two slams (USO last year and the recent RG), but her opponent for a place in MD is her pigeon Dabrowski (5-0 without losing a set, see previous page), so if she doesn't make it this time

Re: Julia Glushko

Routined Dabrowski again (6-3 6-4) to make the MD only to draw Stosur in R1
As you said on GM, first tour MD win will have to wait.
It has to be said it wasn't as annoying as the USO draw last year when there was a 75% chance (12/16) for a winnable draw, here most of the slots were hard, but there were definitely some nicer options.

My over-under for Julia against Stosur is that she wins 4 games. Anything above that would be a pleasant surprise.

Re: Julia Glushko

Very impressed with Julia's performance against Stosur. Showed that she has the weapons to be competitive on the WTA Tour. Hopefully, she will develop a little more consistency and who knows how far she can go.

Re: Julia Glushko

Julia played a wonderful match against Stosur. Awesome backhand and very fiesty and good attitude. Just needs to get a bit more consistent, and I think she needs to be moving forward more. More drive volleys when she gets the chance, and she should hit her volleys with more force and conviction. Other than that, she moves well, has impressively powerful strokes, and plays well under pressure. She could easily become a top 75 player in the next 12 months if she can continue to improve.

Re: Julia Glushko

Just like last year, Julia routines the overrated (well, at least by one user ) Saisai Zheng in Q1.
Only problem is that last year this was the qualifying round (with almost the same score, then 6-3 6-3), whereas now Julia still has two more matches in a pretty tough section.

Her combined record against the two possible veterans expecting in R2 - MEC and Dubois - is 0-6 without even taking a set
And the Italian bit her easily as recently as Wimbledon qualies. It has to be said though that grass isn't exactly Julia's forte and she has improved considerably since the string of losses against Dubois in past years.

If she gets through the next match, it's possible she'll have another one for a place in the MD against (the elder) Rodionova, as occurred in RG.

Re: Julia Glushko

Julia came back from a set and a break down (and 0-4 h2h) to break the spell against Dubois last night, and now trashed Rodionova 3&2 to book her second USO MD appearance (and third slam overall)

This by no means was one of the easiest qualies sections yet she got through, again. Now please a good draw. She deserves it and it's time to get her maiden tour MD win.

Re: Julia Glushko

She drew Petrova
There were at least 8-9 good Q spots. Can't get a break in any MD.

Re: Julia Glushko

One of the 5 worst players she could've drawn... Luck isn't with Julia in MDs.

Petra Kvitova - Li Na - Lucie Safarova - Madison Keys

Nadia has not been successful recently and she has not played much.Been out for an injury.

Could be an interesting match.

You were correct in your assessment. Apparently it wasn't such a bad draw after all

Huge win for Julia, her first ever in a tour MD and needless to say, her best win to date - her only top-100 victims prior to this were McHale three weeks ago and Gajdosova three years ago

Suddenly there's a great opportunity to go even deeper - she faces either (Q) Lucic-Baroni or (WC) Vickery in R2, and I would rate her as favorite against either win Another win means top 100.
