Smashnova-Pistolesi Wins Ninth Career Title in Vienna

VIENNA, Austria - Israel's Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi improved to 9-0 in WTA Tour finals after capturing her second career title at the Wien Energie Grand Prix in Austria.
Smashnova-Pistolesi won her first title of the year by defeating No.6 seed Alicia Molik, 62 36 63 in 1 hour, 52 minutes on a chilly day in Austria where temperatures only reached the 50s.

"When you least expect it, you do your best," Smashnova-Pistolesi said. "I wasn't sure if I would come here because I've played every week for the last couple of months, but I felt like I could play as I had a first round bye and it turned out well for me.

"I'm nine for nine in Tour finals and I feel pretty good about that. I have a tough first round in Paris and after this week, I feel I am very well prepared for it."

The 2002 Vienna champion won a Tour title for the first time since capturing the Helsinki title last in 2003. She now adds the 2004 Vienna title to a list that includes winning Tashkent in 1999, Knokke-Heist in 2000, Auckland, Canberra, Vienna and Shanghai in 2002, along with Sopot and Helsinki last year.

The top player from Israel looked unstoppable in the early stages of the tournament. After receiving a first round bye, the No.2 seed dropped only two games to reach the semifinals - scoring a 60 61 victory against Klara Koukalova and followed with an equally impressive 61 60 win over No.7 seed Magui Serna in the quarterfinals. She then defeated No.5 seeded American Amy Frazier 75 62 to reach her ninth career final.

Molik was playing in her fourth career WTA Tour final and first of the year. The 23-year-old Australian defeated a pair of Slovakians in the early rounds - Martina Sucha and Daniela Hantuchova - and followed by not dropping a set en route to the final by defeating Marlene Weingartner and No.8 seed Jelena Kostanic.

After dropping the first set, Molik roared back midway through the second - recovering from a 0-3 deficit to rattle off six consecutive games to even the match.

"The match was there for the taking," Molik said. "I made a good comeback but I made too many mistakes and she was just too tough today. This week has given me confidence and practice in tough matches so it's been a good preparation week for Roland Garros. I'm happy with the amount of time I was able to spend on the court."

The top seeded doubles team of Martina Navratilova and Lisa Raymond won their first title of the year by defeating No.2 seeds Cara Black and Rennae Stubbs, 62 75. It is their second career title together, joining the Philadelphia title they won together last year.

"I'm glad we decided to come here at the last moment because we had a great week and won the title - our first together since Philadelphia last November," Navratilova said. "We feel it was great preparation for next week and hope to do well in Paris also."

Navratilova now holds 174 doubles titles, the most in the Open Era. Raymond has now won 43 career titles in doubles, which is the 12th most titles recorded in the Open Era.

Black and Stubbs were looking for their third title of the year in their third appearance after already winning in Sydney and Tokyo [Pan Pacific]. Both teams were making their first appearance in Vienna.
