Friday 15 January
Xinyun Han(CHN)def Ekaterina Dzehalevich(BLR) 7-5 6-2
The Belarussian was very unimpressive. She has a pusher game with no power and mainly hit the ball in the middle of the court with occasional moonballs and slices. Han has a decent lefty game, and hits quite hard from both sides, likes to use the forehand to hit winners. Her serve needs work though. Han had a slow start and made heaps of UEs and was down 3-5, but then got her game together and dominated Dzehalevich from that point on.
Ksenia Pervak(RUS) def Kurumi Nara(JPN) 6-4 6-3
I was looking forward to watching this match as they are two young upcoming players but the match was rubbish and neither of them really impressed me. Nara is really short and doesn't have a good serve or power on her groundstrokes, looks like more the consistent road runner type. Pervak grunts a lot and hit a lot of double faults. I last saw vs Kimiko Date and she didn't impress me there either. She doesn't have any huge weapons and not consistent enough either.
Regina Kulikova(RUS)def Ryoko Fuda(JPN)6-3 1-6 6-1
This was one of the best matches of the day, excellent quality especially considering I watched it after Pervak vs Nara. Both were playing well and hitting the ball so hard and deep and having many great rallies. They had a really long game at 3-1 in the 2nd set that lasted about 15 minutes, Fuda won that game and then Kulikova gave up the set after that. Kulikova got a neck massage and Fuda had treatment on her left ankle at the same time. In the 3rd set Fuda got off to a good start but then dropped off after that, while Kulikova became more consistent and hit many winners to win the set 6-1. Kulikova has an impressive game and can trouble many players in the main draw.
Valerie Tetreault(CAN) def. Nikola Hofmanova(AUT) 6-1 3-6 6-3
I didn't see much of this. Nikola is tall and skinny and has nice clean smooth groundstrokes but she was a bit inconsistent. Tetreault was short and stocky and very consistent and quite fast.
Michaella Krajicek(NED) def. Laura Robson(GBR)6-4 7-6(7)
This was also one of the best matches of the day. They were both playing really well and the match was very close. Krajicek was serving for the 2nd set but Robson played really well to break her back, and Robson also hit winners to save match points in the TB but Krajicek had too much class and was able to get it done in the end. Robson has excellent groundstrokes both forehand and backhand, but her serve is quite slow and weak, especially when compared to Krajicek.
Julia Schruff(GER) def. Elena Bovina(RUS) 6-3 6-4
Bovina was just really erratic, double faulted a lot as usual, and never looked like winning. Schruff stayed consistent and was always in control.
Yanina Wickmayer(BEL) def. Naomi Cavaday(GBR) 6-0 6-1
Wickmayer was really playing well, she was hitting so hard and hit many winners and didn't miss many shots at all. Cavaday was trying her best and fought hard but there wasn't much she could do.
Bojana Jovanovski(SRB)def. Lilia Osterloh(USA)7-5 6-2
Jovanovski has an impressive game, she hits very hard and clean groundstrokes, and also hits good hard aggressive shots when on the run. She was too good for Osterloh and can definitely be a great player in the future.
