Nastya won the KC. A Tier I in her homeland. It was a great year for Nastya.
And she can still improve. And she will.

This year Nastya reached the quarter finals in Melbourne and got 282 points.
She finished strong this year to get that #7 ranking, and being seeded in the top 8 for the AO is good because she needs to defend those points.
Maybe Nastya will do what she did in Leipzig and defend those points and add some more.

Nastya plays Mary Pierce in her first Fed Cup match. Nastya has won three out of four meetings, the most recent 7-6(2), 6-1 at the US Open.
Udachi Nastya!!

In Nastya's tremendous 2003 she has not only won the Tier I KC, beating Mauresmo. Tier II Leipzig, beating JHH. And the #7 in the world ranking, Russian #1.
Nastya is also 3 for 3 in Fed Cup matches in 2003. 2 wins in April (CRO), and 1 in July (SLO).
Nastya looking to be 4-for-4 in 2003 Fed Cup. Then 5-for-5.
Udachi Nastya!!

Pierce took the first set from Myskina 6-4. Russia is in deep trouble in this tie. They just don't have the muscle and power to match Amelie Mauresmo and Mary Pierce.

And playing Vera Zvonareva instead of Elena Dementieva is a puzzling move. She was completely overmatched by Mauresmo's talent and power. Now Mauresmo probably would have beaten Dementieva. She's a better tennis player and own Elena indoors. But the bottom line is you must win or lose with your best players. That's true in any sport. Dementieva needs to play tomoorow against Pierce. I can't see Pierce beating a rested Dementieva who is twice as fast as Pierce.

And what has Zvonareva done in recent months to merit playing singles in the Fed Cup semifinals against France? Where was Nadia Petrova who actually has a weapon which is her fine first serve?

But it's up to Anastasia to save the day. She must win these next 2 sets and even the Tie at 1 for Russia to have a realistic chance to advance to the 2003 Fed Cup finals.

Udachi Anastasia!

This Fed Cup was set up perfectly for Russia to win...

So, I knew they would blow it.

What a fight! Come on now, Russian is still in this thing!

Congrats to Anastasia on a great comeback win! She saved a match point and saved Russia from an almost certain demise in the Fed Cup semifinals. But Russia is still in trouble because I don't see Amelie Mauresmo losing her second singles match. Maybe Ana can surprise me and upset Mauresmo. But I would be pleased if Russia could make the doubles match a live match.

Anastasia Myskina may lack power and an intimidating physique that alot of the Russina's have. But she has the fire and desire that most of the Russina's lack. She showed great heart today. Ana didn't want to lose on her home court in the Fed Cup semifinals and that's what drove her to a greay comeback victory. She came through in the clutch.

As I've said before, you can't question Nastya's heart. She's a true competitor.
Nastya has shown since the US Open that she can play with all these top players.
I expect another great effort tomorrow.

That was a tough loss for Anastasia today against Amelie Mauresmo in the Fed Cup semifinals. But congrats to Ana on a wonderful year.

I'm sure Anastasia is very upset about losing her crucial match against Mauresmo today. She won the first set but then faded against her much stronger opponent.
