Horrible match by Nastia (with minor exceptions). Awful and pathetic shot selection, esp. at the start of the match.

Nastia had a realistic chance to go 3-0 in her group. Instead, it's 1-2.

Sometimes I really wish I were not a fan of Nastia or any other Russian player

Nastya shot herself in the foot again

again she had Jen by the balls just as she did Henin and let them both off

thats the main diff...... to getting up ranks
Nastya ends #7
would have been #6 if she won today

all very disappointing

Good luck to my favs

Nastya should now be confident that she can walk on the court with anyone and compete.
The next step is to beat players like JHH and Cap at the biggest events.
And Nastya will have many chances in the future.

Anyone, GL? Even the Williams sisters?

Well said, GL. I think Nadia Petrova making the 2003 French Open semifinals was the highlight of the year for female Russian tennis.

Oh Vaiva, you're being too hard on Anastasia and the Russina's. She's getting the most out of her ability. For her to end the year at #7 is a great achievement. I know she let the match aginst Justine Henin slip away but that will happen sometimes because Ana is a streaky player.

And it's nice to see Anastasia is such a good sport. She even kisses her opponents after losing a tough match. Ana has grace and class.

Nastya lost 7-5 in the third to JHH. 6-4 in the third to Capriati. That's much better than her matches at Wimbledon and the US Open.
Nastya made a forward move after New York.
Now keep improving, and she can play anyone close.

Cat... I think we know it's a great achievement overall but to lose two heartbreakers in three days, two huge matches which she had so many chances to win, two matches against ailing opponents... that's very disappointing. It's a frustrating end to the year I guess it's lucky she has until January to get over these losses.

Why is that that her opponents, who look completely dead before, suddenly arise from ashes for match against her. I just don't get it. Jennifer could not do anything with her injury for two days between her match against Ai and Henin. But then she gets miraculously healed within few hours..

I guess, she did just what Henin did before to Nastya.

I wanted Nastya to be playing tonight, too. Elena also.
When you're up 5-0, you have to close it out. Capriati was up 5-1, and she found a way to finish.
When Nastya gets that opportunity, she has to win that 6th game.
I still am very optimistic about Fed Cup and 2004 for Nastya.
I think in 2004 and 2005 we are to going to have more big forward moves from several Russians.

She is a good fighter after all. She might be too nervous against Jenn and Justine at the end of the 3rd sets. The worse match is the one aginst Justine cuz she should have won in two. She should have taken advantages of them not playing their best tennis. If those matches had been tier II or III tournaments, she could have won at least against Jenn cuz it seems to me Jenn is just interested in big tourments.

I still believe she will do fine in Fed Cup. She has lots of confidence right now. She should know by now that she can play top ranked players.

I've just saw a tape of the final in Liepzig and I think she quite improve a lot .She ran so fast .I think her backhand is a strongest shot and her mentally toughness is better .

Nastya finished the year as Russian #1. Overall #7.
Nastya also was #1 Russian in 2003 earnings. There were 8 Russians in the top 30 in money won. The youngest of those being Sveta.
Congatulations Nastya, and all the players!

This season was great for Nastya. She improved so much and won many important matches. She finished with no.7 and this is her highest rank ever. I think she is beliving in herself more now and for me next year can be even better.
Thanks you Nastya !!!
