Computer help re: sound

When I want to listen to music or watch video files (eg. with Winamp, Windows Media Player, RealOne Player) no sound comes out. But the problem isn't the speakers (they're not broken and they are plugged in properly). I know this for sure because sound comes out when I'm chatting or when I turn on the computer. What could be the problem?

Could it be that the default volume is on mute? Is there anyway of resetting the audio settings? Could there be a problem with the programs detecting my sound card?

Can someone help me please? I miss my music...

Check the slider and the mute settings in the Wave column of the volume control.
