Afghani detainees - POW?

I think that US might be making a mistake here, by not giving them that status. Of course, technically it is correct, US never recognized Taliban government, hence they have an option of of not considering them POW. But the point is that they ARE POW. I am afraid that it is another conflict of means and goals. US wants to get as much information from detainees as possible. But if they are given POW status, they will automatically be under umbrella of Geneva convention, and therefore it will limit, if not exclude, the use of "special methods" of interrogation that US is surely using. What do you think?
