Cuban Salsa Queen Celia Cruz Dies at 77

.c The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - Celia Cruz, the Cuban-born singer who went from singing in Havana nightclubs to become the ``Queen of Salsa,'' died Wednesday, her publicist said.

Cruz, who was 77, died of a brain tumor. She had surgery for the ailment in December but her health faltered. She died at her home in Fort Lee, N.J., according to her publicist, Blanca Lasalle.

In the 1950s, Cruz became famous with the legendary Afro-Cuban group La Sonora Matancera. She left Cuba for the United States in 1960, and was credited with bringing salsa music to a broad audience.

Cruz, who recorded more than 70 albums and had more than a dozen Grammy nominations, won best salsa album for ``La Negra Tiene Tumbao'' at the 2002 Latin Grammy Awrds. Among her other best-known recordings are ``Yerberito Moreno'' and ``Que le Den Candela.''

Called the ``Queen of Salsa'' and the ``diva of Latin song,'' Cruz remained energetic late into her career. At last year's Latin Grammys, she showed up wearing a frothy blue-and-white headpiece and a tight red dress and gave a hip-shaking performance.

Cruz's alliance with fellow salsa star Tito Puente garnered her some of the biggest success in her career. In 1987, she was honored with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, and several years later, the city of Miami gave Calle Ocho, the main street of its Cuban community, the honorary name of Celia Cruz Way.

Cruz also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Smithsonian Institution and in 1994, President Clinton honored her with an award from the National Endowment of the Arts.

Legendary Salsa Singer Celia Cruz Dies

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Cuban-born salsa legend Celia Cruz died on Wednesday at her home in New Jersey, her representative in Mexico said.

Silvia Cantarell told Reuters that Cruz died shortly after 5 p.m. with her husband, Pedro Knight, and close friends at her side.

Cruz had been suffering from cancer and had been in a coma since Tuesday.

Known as the "Queen of Salsa," Cruz was a pioneer of Afro-Cuban music. She was known for her vocal talent, outrageous costumes, wild wigs and energetic stage persona.

Cruz found success half a century ago in a musical style previously dominated by men.

The Cuban exile recorded more than 70 albums. She won the Grammy Award for the first time in 1989 and was also a two-time Latin Grammy award winner.

Cruz' representative said she was born on Oct. 21, 1924, although some Web sites have said she was born in 1925.

Born in a poor neighborhood of Havana, Cruz was one of four children. Her father wanted her to become a schoolteacher, but she had other interests. In 1947, she enrolled in the National Music Conservatory of Cuba, where she studied musical theory, voice and piano.

She became famous in the 1950s when she joined the Afro-Cuban group La Sonora Matancera, which was looking for a new female member. She sang with the group for 15 years.

After Fidel Castro came to power in 1959, La Sonora Matancera defected from Cuba. Cruz settled in New York City in 1962. That year she also married Knight, a trumpeter in the group.

Cruz struggled to sell her albums in the 1960s when her style fell out of vogue. But in the 1970s, young Hispanics looking to get in touch with their roots rediscovered her music.

Cruz has also appeared in films. She played a wealthy nightclub owner in the 1992 movie "The Mambo Kings" and also appeared in the 1995 film "The Perez Family."

all these recent deaths...

....This is fucked up, fucked up....

This is your blind spot, blind spot.
It should be obvious, but it's not.

You cannot kickstart a dead horse
You just crush yourself and walk away
I don't care what the future holds
Cause I'm right here in your arms today
With your fingers you can touch me

I'll be your black swan, black swan
I'm for spare parts, broken up.

Don´t listen to a word I say
The screams all sound the same
Though the truth may vary this
Ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

She'll no doubt be jamming with the angels choir up in heaven. What a shame. I grew up with her music so it's going to be heartbreaking when I tell my folks she's passed.

You know onlythe deaths of four famous people have made me sad Selena, princess Diana, Maria felix and Celia Cruz. You know I can remember seeing her ever since I was 4 or 5 and know I am almost 18. She is one of those peope that seemed eternal to me. So many latin American Artist say and think that by singing in english is the only way to become international and recognized but Celia made most of her success by singng in Spanish and proving that if the music is good anyone will listen to it. I hope her music will live on and that no one will forget her career. She is truly an example for others to follow
