AP: Man wakes after 19 years in coma

Man wakes after 19 years in coma

Accident victim stuck in 1984; believes Reagan still president

ASSOCIATED PRESS

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Ark., July 9 — The words began tumbling out — at first just a few nouns and eventually a torrent of phrases. Terry Wallis, who had been in a coma since a 1984 car accident, regained consciousness last month to the surprise of doctors and the delight of his family, including his mother, who heard his first word in 19 years.

“HE STARTED out with ’Mom’ and surprised her and then it was ’Pepsi’ and then it was ’milk.’ And now it’s anything he wants to say,” Stone County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center social director Alesha Badgley said Tuesday.
His mother, Angilee Wallis, called her son’s return to consciousness a miracle: “I couldn’t tell you my first thought, I just fell over on the floor,” she said.
Terry Wallis, now 39, was riding with a friend in July 1984 when their car left the road and plunged into a creek. Wallis and his friend were found the next day underneath a bridge. The friend was dead and Wallis was comatose.
Wallis’ daughter, Amber, was born shortly before the accident, and the coma dragged on for almost two decades. She is now 19 and her dad has said he wants to walk again, for her. He is a quadriplegic as a result of the crash.
“It’s been hard dealing with it, it’s been hard realizing the man I married can’t be there,” said Wallis’ wife, Sandi. “We all, the whole family, missed out on his company.”
The silence ended June 12 when Wallis uttered his first word. He was able to talk a little more a day later and has improved ever since.

NON-STOP TALKING
Terry’s father, Jerry Wallis, said his son talks almost nonstop now, but it seems as though time stopped for him after the wreck. Terry still believes Ronald Reagan is the president.
Terry has asked to speak to his grandmother, who died several years ago, and even recited her phone number — something everyone else in the family had forgotten.
“You see, he’s still back in 1984,” said Jerry Wallis.
For the Wallis family, Terry’s return to consciousness has been a blessing.
Perry Wallis, Terry’ brother, said “just to put it bluntly, it was pure hell to see your brother laying there, not knowing if you’ll ever talk to him again.”
The timing of the recovery also has raised eyebrows.
“It’s kind of peculiar. He wrecked on Friday the 13th and 19 years later he started talking on Friday the 13th,” Jerry Wallis said.

Could you imagine. You are out driving with a friend, and it's 1984 then all of a sudden you are in a coma for 19 years. The guy was 20 when he went into a coma, he's 39 now... I wonder if he is slightly depressed about all this. He even missed his daughter growing up. This is a sad story, but still a miracle... abet somewhat bittersweet.

FUCK! Stories like this scare the hell out of me! Imagine slipping into a coma when people used typewriters and white-out and waking up to find instant high-quality downloadable porn and Chris Evert retired! I'd totally freak out! He went down when Starsky and Hutch were on top and missed Miami Vice altogether! He doesn't even know who Madonna is!! Oh shivers!!!

WoW, just AMAZING!!

It's such a great story, I'm sure he's surprised about all the news events he has missed in the past 19 years. I mean, everything from 9-11, to the end of the Soviet Union, the Collapse of the Berlin Wall, to his own daughters graduation from High School, and all missed birthdays.

Just amazing, but a GREAT story.

This just seems like a bootlegged UPN sitcom but it has amazed me since I heard about it on the news yesterday. How the fuck is he going to get caught up with what happened? How are you going to explain the internet? Totally and utterly baffling.

Anyway, I don't know if this reminds me more of the first Austin Powers or The Flight of the Navigator. With the exception of course that he is paralyzed.

An amazing story. I'm glad the guy's alive, but I also feel sorry for him...he has 19 years of the world to catch up on.

My advice would be to take him through everything slowly...one year at a time every day. Don't start springing the Internet and 9-11 on him. It would be too much for him to process.

My prayers are with him...hopefully he'll be able to walk again for his daughter.

What amazes me is his family somehow found a way to pay medical bills. Can you imagine supporting the doctor bills for someone in a coma that long? GEEZ

But he has a lot of new things to get used to. I hope the man catches up, and walks again for his daughter.

This reminds me of that Porsche Boxster commercials from a few years ago. Some man awakens from a 50 coma, and the admiration of the two different but yet similar cars..... Ok that's enough of me being silly.

I'm BACK & SINGLE. So lock up all the hotties!

....This is fucked up, fucked up....

This is your blind spot, blind spot.
It should be obvious, but it's not.

You cannot kickstart a dead horse
You just crush yourself and walk away
I don't care what the future holds
Cause I'm right here in your arms today
With your fingers you can touch me

I'll be your black swan, black swan
I'm for spare parts, broken up.

From what I heard, his family also took him out on holidays. How the hell does that work?

Gee, in addition to the other movies I named, its like a "Weekend at Bernie's" knockoff too.

Wee bit youngin' being a few weeks ago?

This story irritates me though, should I be happy that he's still alive or depressed that he's paralyzed? I'm surprised he was still just sitting there for 19 years and they didn't pull the plug. It sort of reminds me of that episode of Seinfeld where Kramer does his living will and Elaine gives him advice on when he should pull the plug (yes, I watch too much tv and movies).

And how fucked up is it that the last thing you remember is being 20 and then waking up and finding out that you have a daughter that is 19?
