Hockey fans are Neanderthals. He's a hockey ref, right? Regardless, I stand by my point.

Instead of going to the IOC, they went to the embassy.
The US goverment had no hand appointing the referee.
I think the head of the Olympic judges for this olympic is Russian.

How many? 10 people?

The thread is about conditions in Sochi and the embassy is in Moscow.

no more than that.

The Olympic are held in Sochi, there is no US embassy in Sochi, the protest is about an Olympic event.

Re: Bad/Hilarious conditions at the Sochi Olympics.

It was not at an embassy, but at a university.

And it was done with humour.

But this all seems to mean that the refs at an Olympic hockey game are not automatically chosen from neutral countries. This amazes me.

This is because NHL refused to agree with 'Olympic break', unless Olympic tournament would use solely NHL referees. As essentially all NHL refs are Canadian/American, it means that there simply isn't enough refs available for complete neutrality.

When NHL refs arrived first time in Nagano 1998, they were surrounded, if possible, by even bigger hype than the actual players. Finally the tournament would proceed without controversy about incompetent International referees. Or so we were assured: when the games began, it quickly turned out that NHL refs were even more clueless than International referees and there were many refereeing scandals.

Re: Bad/Hilarious conditions at the Sochi Olympics.

What?? I didn't know this and to be honest thats an absolute joke that a referee can be from one of the competing countries, surely with so many Canadian and US refs they could ensure neither get their own ref for a match.

How do countries put up with that BS?

In Vancouver 3 of the 4 final officials were Canadian Seriously that stupid and clearly biased.

I don't know extactly how the official for a given match ir chosen, but I think the organisers oversee the officiating in general.

Back to location of the protest..
It appears there is some confusion
The WSJ mentioned the US Embassy in its headline and and the body of the reporting.

Quote:

At U.S. Embassy, Russians Protest Hockey Goal Being Overturned

MOSCOW—Russian hockey fans worked themselves into a lather Monday at a protest outside the American embassy in Moscow over a disputed call during their team’s stunning preliminary-round loss to the Team USA at the Sochi Olympics.
The seemingly good-natured demonstration was sparked by an American referee disallowing a Russian goal that Russian fans believe cost them Saturday’s hotly contested game.
Dozens of jersey-clad protestors, including several from Russia’s ruling party’s youth wing, gathered on the streets outside the U.S. embassy chanting, “Make Soap Out of the Ref”—an expression common among disgruntled fans at soccer matches.
.....

source: http://blogs.wsj.com/dailyfix/2014/0...ng-overturned/

BUT the NYT issued a correction later after making the same mistake

Quote:

MOSCOW — It was the biggest demonstration so far concerning the Sochi Olympics, and it had nothing to do with gay rights, environmental damage or corruption.
Dozens of Russian fans gathered Monday at the Moscow State Agroengineering University, some brandishing hockey sticks, to protest a disallowed goal scored by the Russian team in Saturday’s Olympic hockey match against the United States in Sochi, a decision that they felt cost them the game against their Cold War rivals.

Correction: February 17, 2014
An earlier version of this article misidentified where the protest of the disallowed hockey goal took place.

It was at the Moscow State Agroengineering University, not the United States embassy in Moscow.

An earlier headline, picture caption and web summary repeated the error

The whole US/Russia hype in the hockey has me cheering on Canada just to shut the media up

The ABC website says 13 officials are from the NHL and 15 are from European leagues. If the IOC allows refs from the countries playing, then all the controversy generated by the refs will be the fault of the IOC.

The IOC tend to go the the recommendations and rules of the governing bodies of each sport. Hence why the Badminton in London became a mess.

In Nagano bronze medal match between Finland and Canada, ref was Canadian and man, you should have seen some of those calls. I think he gave Canada something like 4 minutes worth of 5 vs 3 powerplay.

Funniest thing was that Canada still lost.

Russian police violently whipped Pussy Riots band members today as they were trying to perform.
