Let's get cultural. What's your favourite food?

The great thing about the net is that you are chatting people from all different parts of the world. I am always interested in finding out about great food. Dishes that are quite commplace for you might me really different and rare for others.

My favourite things are:

1. There is a Vietnamese traditional beef noodle soup called pho. It is my favorite meal in the world

2. Thai cooking. Thai curries, and pad thai. Yum.

3. Tom Yum soup

4. Anything prawns, crab, or calamari

5. Sushi & sushimi, and Teppanyaki

I love Italian food like Spaghetti Bolognese, or lasagne. I also like stammpot, and chow mein is alright too!

I just love sushis. It looks clean (lol), simple, no sauce or anything (well at first hehe). And it's just the kind of food I like.

Question for italian posters: I'm leaving for Padovia in a month time. What food should I taste there?

Arrow Spanish food!!!

I love Spanish food! Specially now that I am living in UK, I miss my food! lol

I think my absolute fav is "Cocido madrileño"

Not Spanish food... I do not care much for English food (what is there of it, anyway ), Chinese food is very tasty but it settles too heavily on my stomach... Once in Belgium I tried something called "onion soup" it had some cheese on top of it, really yummy! Greek food is very tasty too! I rather like Italian and Greek food, it must be that they also use olive oil to cook.

Padovia is in the North of Italy (not far from Venice). Is Padovia the english name for this city btw?

As I understand it, there is quite a difference in the food from North to south. I also love Italian food. Some of the pastas and pestos and stuff are amazing. Are you going for a holiday?

You know Julien, I was looking for the recipe, but as I thought, most of the words are "spanish" so not real translation for the Cocido... I found this list of ingredients somewhere on the net:

<ul>
<li> ½ kilo garbanzos</li>
<li> ½ kilo &quot;morcillo&quot; (stewing meat, not to be confused with
morcilla)</li>
<li> 1 breast of stewing hen</li>
<li> 100 grams fat back or unsmoked bacon</li>
<li> 1 &quot;punta&quot; of serrano ham (they sell you this in the market)</li>
<li> 1 chorizo for cocido</li>
<li> 1 morcilla with onion (blood sausage but not the kind with rice)</li>
<li> 2 stew bones</li>
<li> 1 carrots</li>
<li> 1 small onion</li>
<li> ½ of a small cabbage</li>
<li> 2 turnips</li>
<li> 6 medium-sized potatoes</li>
<li> 3 cloves</li>
<li> salt</li>
</ul>

You are both making me hungry! Julien, there is no need to be embarraed. That's the point of this whole thread, to find out more about different cultures. What better way than through food.

Pesto is made of basil, olive oil, and garlic (and whatever else you might want to put in ). it is delicious spread on a baguette, or you can mix it throuygh pasta.

Julien, being french do you encounter a lot of Vietnamese food?

Gallofa, that picture looks delicious! No wonder why you Spaniards need a siesta! It can't be an every day meal. You would need your arteries drained every month! It looks yummy though! I notice that there is no tomato in the recipe. I thought tomato was used in Spanish cooking a lot?

Well yes, there are a lot of asian restaurants in France.
But to tell the truth, I don't really know the difference between chinese and vietnamese food *hoping gmt won't see that post *.
Could someone explain that to me? lol

Chinese food is a lot oiler and saltier. It is a lot heavier. Vietnamese uses a lot of fresh vegetables (like lettuce), anmd herbs, and is much lighter. It is very much like Thai food, though there are Chinese influences. Vietnamese food also has a french influence when the french colonised Vietnam. the french taught the Vietnamese how to bake the best bread in the world! North Vietnamese and south Vietnamese cooking is very different as well.

I'm not that keen on Chinese food. It is very heavy, thogh I do like Peking duck!
