Only 0.1% of football fans are homophobic? You're way too optimistic.
I guarantee you the number is way higher. And sexism is so prevalent as well.
i really don't think it's as carefree a situation as you paint. nobody would say anything negative in the papers, of course, but i'm absolutely sure an out player would be the target of much harrassment, both from other fans as well as from opposing players.
I might have been exaggerating with the percentages, but no more so than the usual rhetoric that gets trotted out about football fans (I can only talk about the UK as I don't experience it first hand anywhere else). If anything, football fans as a group (again, I can only talk about the UK - I'm aware it's different elsewhere) are ahead of the curve on race issues as it's been drummed into them for decades. There's no reason it won't be the same with issues of sexuality... although I stress, I don't think it's a major issue in the sport. I don't hear homophobic comments or chants in crowds, I don't see them on message boards/twitter/facebook and you have high profile (rightly or wrongly) footballers like Joey Barton being massively vocal on tackling homophobia & showing his support.
As for sexism, well yeah... I regularly get comments but the worst it makes me want to do is
. I think the sexism point is it's deemed acceptable or not as serious as things like racism or homophobia so people still do it. It's a society thing as much as a football thing.
Anyway, to go back to the original point, I'm 100% convinced that whenever the first Premier League footballer comes out as gay, there won't be any kind of backlash - it'll be quite the opposite. I fully get what a massive decision that will be though for whoever comes out whilst still playing; I'm just confident it'll end up being a hugely positive moment for him, this issue & the sport. Society is at an indescribably different place to where it was when Justin Fashanu came out (although in his case, having an absolute (insert your swear word of choice here) as a brother didn't help).
