So the hunt is over, the German press has been obsessed with finding a gay soccer player and now it is even a high profile one, former national player and captain of a team. But they didn't find him, he found them.

Well, it's not exactly like this. For some (me included) it's a long process till you know and you acept that you actually like men not women.
I don't think sexual orientation can be changed.

And that's why I am confused about dybbuk's comments. If a man used to get his D hard fantasising women, and now he gets his D hard fantasing men. So if SO cannot be changed, so he has to be at least bi.

Have you read all the posts in this thread?

As Kournikova fan said in his helpful post, for him, what causes you an erection is not so much what determines your sexuality who you choose to have (sexual) relationships with.

You don't know the circumstances of his relationship with that woman. Sexuality is a lot more complex than Gay-bi-straight. Regardless of whether his sexuality has changed or not, why try to force your own preconceptions on him (i.e. he has to be at least...) when he is quite clearly as identifying as gay and saying he would only ever want to be in relationship with a man. Maybe it has changed or maybe he was gay all the time and just didn't realise, he could have been taken viagra, non-consciously visualising men to get an erection etc. You don't know.

Didn't read back. And I was just about to comment on Paddy's post. Now I know more about it.

And by no mean I tried to do the bolded part on him, I was actually thinking of what or how to rebut when my mates or even my relatives (rare) ask or talk about homosexuality. I want to know more about it, it's just that simple.

Hopefully we're getting closer to an active top-level player feeling comfortable enough to come out.
Only 0.1% of football fans are homophobic? You're way too optimistic.

I guarantee you the number is way higher. And sexism is so prevalent as well.

Yes the whole Andy Grey/whats-his-face sexism thing highlighted that.

I get that respectable soccer fans like to think their fellow fans are like them and are hoping they are but there are large amounts of very ignorant close minded people who follow soccer.

In GAA there is that element too, Donal Cusack stated he got homophobic abuse from fans over him being gay. A lot of the alleged "macho" sports have underlying homophobia and sexism.

Re: Another athlete comes out

It's bad enough already for some black players to play in certain arenas, I don't blame gay players for not coming out while active. Not to mention a foorballer could find himself playing in a country where it is literally illegal to be gay.

i really don't think it's as carefree a situation as you paint. nobody would say anything negative in the papers, of course, but i'm absolutely sure an out player would be the target of much harrassment, both from other fans as well as from opposing players.

I might have been exaggerating with the percentages, but no more so than the usual rhetoric that gets trotted out about football fans (I can only talk about the UK as I don't experience it first hand anywhere else). If anything, football fans as a group (again, I can only talk about the UK - I'm aware it's different elsewhere) are ahead of the curve on race issues as it's been drummed into them for decades. There's no reason it won't be the same with issues of sexuality... although I stress, I don't think it's a major issue in the sport. I don't hear homophobic comments or chants in crowds, I don't see them on message boards/twitter/facebook and you have high profile (rightly or wrongly) footballers like Joey Barton being massively vocal on tackling homophobia & showing his support.

As for sexism, well yeah... I regularly get comments but the worst it makes me want to do is . I think the sexism point is it's deemed acceptable or not as serious as things like racism or homophobia so people still do it. It's a society thing as much as a football thing.

Anyway, to go back to the original point, I'm 100% convinced that whenever the first Premier League footballer comes out as gay, there won't be any kind of backlash - it'll be quite the opposite. I fully get what a massive decision that will be though for whoever comes out whilst still playing; I'm just confident it'll end up being a hugely positive moment for him, this issue & the sport. Society is at an indescribably different place to where it was when Justin Fashanu came out (although in his case, having an absolute (insert your swear word of choice here) as a brother didn't help).
