Greatest Hollywood Director

This should be fun. Only 10, too bad. So couldn't include Musical director such as Minnelli, and Fosse. Also Orson Welles, George Cukor, Sidney Lumet, etc..

I can't decide either. Lubitsch/Wilder/Kazan are all good

Re: Greatest Hollywood Director

He may have been a horrible racist, but D.W. Griffith pretty much wrote the book on the Hollywood approach to film-making.

I know, Chaplin said he's 'the father of us all', but he seemed a bit too far a figure Blame the limited poll choice

Re: Greatest Hollywood Director

Arronofsky is one of my favourites but the obvious omition in the list is Stanley Kubrick. Shouldn't he be in that list? He was such a visionary director.

From this list Alfred Hitchkock is head and shoulders above the others imo

Re: Greatest Hollywood Director

Yeah, Cukor was amazing. Welles was brilliant, but had such a limited output compared to most of the others on your list I can agree with him being left off.

Frank Capra is not to my taste, but he should also probably be mentioned.

Re: Greatest Hollywood Director

I think the poll would be much more interesting and intriguing had you omitted the Hollywood part and added directors like Bergman, Fellini, Lars von Trier. But then again there's only room for 10 names

Re: Greatest Hollywood Director

Well, that's another poll then. Favorite non-Hollywood director. I'd throw in Kurosawa, Lang and Eisenstein.

Oh, he's brilliant.

In the same vein I like Herschel Gordon Lewis, Coleman Francis and, of course, Roger Corman.
