Re: Movies that should have won the Oscar but didn't

I think GG is better than AA. Just look at the 70s

1970
GG; MASH
AA; Patton

1971
GG; French Connection
AA; same

1972
The Godfather/Cabaret
The Godfather

1973
The Exorcist/American Graffiti
The Sting

1974
Chinatown/The Longest Yard
Godfather

1975
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
same

1976
Rocky/ A Star is Born
AA; Rocky O.K. both failed miserably this year

LA Film Critics; Network/Rocky
NBR; All the President's Men
NYFCC; same
National Society of Film Cricits; same

Taxi Driver didn't win anything.

77
The Turning Point/The Goodbye Girl
AA; Annie Hall

78
Midnight Express/Heaven Can Wait
The Deer Hunter

NBR got it right; Days of Heaven

79
LAFCA; Kramer vs Kramer
NYFCC; same
NBR; Manhattan
NSFC; Breaking Away
GG; Kramer/Breaking Away
AA; Kramer

fucked up All that Jazz or Apocalypse Now should have won it.

Re: Movies that should have won the Oscar but didn't

I agree with most of your choices, but especially so with Cabaret. Cabaret not winning the Oscar for the best film is atravesty. Yes, The Godfather is a great film, but Cabaret is on a whole different level.
Oh, and x million @ Taxi Driver winning nothing.
I'm going through some lists now and I'd also choose Altman's Nashville over One Flew, both Apocalypse Now and All That Jazz over Kramer Vs. Kramer, definitely MASH over Patton, The Lion in Winter over Oliver!, Treasure of Sierra Madre deserved one...

Re: Movies that should have won the Oscar but didn't

The first movie that comes to mind is The Color Purple (Directed by Stephen Spilberg)

Didn't this movie snag a whopping 11 nominations and not produce a single oscar?? Robbed!

Reese Witherspoon should have won an Oscar for Legally Blonde, and Sandra Buttocks for Miss Congeniality. Both those films should have also won Best Picture!

The Academy doesn't appreciate comedies.

Those 2 at least got one later. Marilyn was overlooked constantly despite her 'comedies' now deemed classics. And let's face it, Monroe is iconic and remembered 50 years after her death, which most Oscar winners aren't!

As for the others, I may be a little biased

2010: Black Swan/Social Network >>>> The King's Speech
2007: Atonement >>> No Country for Old Men
2002: The Pianist >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Chicago

Some absolute personal favourites of mine that were incredible but faced tough competition I'd say are Secrets and Lies in '96 (l. to The English Patient), In the Bedroom in '01 (l. to A Beautiful Mind) and Lost in Translation in '03 (l. to Return of the King)
They even messed up the introduction. They said the film was originally from Japan

Tennis Tipping:

Doubles (CHR#10) - Cincinnati 09 Hobart 16(w/Drake1980) ; Auckland Copenhagen 10 Palermo 11 Stuttgart Baku 12 Palermo 13 (w/Richie's) ; Monterrey 14 (w/Adrian.) USO 14 Moscow Hong Kong New Haven 15(w/Frederik)

Re: Movies that should have won the Oscar but didn't

I think in general every year there are many arthouse or foreign language films totally disregarded by the Oscar panel. If we are just talking about those who were nominated but didn't win:

Amour over Argo ;
Black Swan over TKS

The Color Purple should have won best picture and actress. Angela Bassett for "What's love got to do with it", Meryl Streep should have won a bunch of times..she can act the yellow pages.

Venus and Serena ....Often imitated NEVER duplicated!!!!!!!

I don't think much of Ms Buttocks acting abilities or even charms (and I never saw the film in question), but in all seriousness, I do agree about Reese Witherspoon and Legally Blonde. She really did a great job there. Most actors can mope their way through a ''serious'' role with various degrees of success, but a comedy stands or falls by the strength of the lead, IMO, and she made that film work so well.

I agree with this too. She was genuinely good at comedy. Even when partnered with Lemmon and Curtis, she managed to stand her own. Not to mention how much better she was than Lauren Bacall in How to Marry... Bacall is an interesting character, but, man, she couldn't act for toffee.
