Two Americans shot in Kuwait, one dead

KUWAIT CITY - At least one gunman shot two Americans Tuesday in Kuwait near a U.S. military camp, killing one and wounding the other, a U.S. spokesman said.

The two men, both civilian contractors working for the U.S. military, were driving a 4x4 vehicle on a highway north of Kuwait City and had stopped at an intersection.

The shooter or shooters then riddled the vehicle with automatic weapons fire from a row of trees just off the road on the passenger side and fled the scene.

At least 20 bullet holes were clearly visible in the vehicle. The passenger bore the brunt of the attack and died at the site.

The driver was taken to a Kuwaiti hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.

The attack occurred near Camp Doha, a large military base housing 17,000 American troops on the outskirts of Kuwait City.

American and Kuwaiti forensics teams were quickly on site to close the area off and begin an investigation.

Officials reacting to the shooting said relations between Americans and Kuwaitis are good, but there are concerns that anti-American sentiment
