not the first one and probably the second neither, the Israelis may have reservations and concerns about all the involved parties, like the Western powers, but they are monitoring the Syrian-Lebanese border very carefully...

More developments

Quote:

Sources: U.S. believes Israel has conducted an airstrike into Syria

(CNN) -- The United States believes Israel has conducted an airstrike into Syria, two U.S. officials tell CNN.

U.S. and Western intelligence agencies are reviewing classified data showing Israel most likely conducted a strike in the Thursday-Friday time frame, according to both officials. This is the same time frame that the U.S. collected additional data showing Israel was flying a high number of warplanes over Lebanon.

One official said the United States had limited information so far and could not yet confirm those are the specific warplanes that conducted a strike. Based on initial indications, the U.S. does not believe Israeli warplanes entered Syrian airspace to conduct the strikes.

Both officials said there is no reason to believe Israel struck at a chemical weapons storage facilities. The Israelis have long said they would strike at any targets that prove to be the transfer of any kinds of weapons to Hezbollah or other terrorist groups, as well as at any effort to smuggle Syrian weapons into Lebanon that could threaten Israel.

The Lebanese army website listed 16 flights by Israeli warplanes penetrating Lebanon's airspace from Thursday evening through Friday afternoon local time.
The Israeli military had no comment. But a source in the Israeli defense establishment told CNN's Sara Sidner, "We will do whatever is necessary to stop the transfer of weapons from Syria to terrorist organizations. We have done it in the past and we will do it if necessary the future."

Wouldn't surprise me if Israel has just agreed to do the US's dirty work for them.

Obama gets what he wants without bloodying his nose.

Bad idea. Israel should have left this thing along. My guess, they interfered because they judged the possibility of chemical weapon transfer to the Hesbollah as inevitable otherwise

Most reports say the strikes were to prevent shipments of Fateh rockets to Hezbollah.

Those weapons are far more accurate than the katyusha and homemade rockets Hezbollah has used in the past, and can carry heavier warheads.

IMHO, it's a tossup as to whether Israel's attacks or Hezbollah having these weapons is more destabilizing to the region.

Well this should prove that Israel is more than capable of handling Middle East issues on its own. I found it rich when Netanyahu tried to sell his cartoon bomb to the UN. IMO, Israel need not rope the U.S. into Iran or Syria, the American public has zero appetite for another occupation war.

Re: CNN: Israel Air Strikes in Syria; Suspecting Transfer of Weapons to Terrorist Gro

So posters., what comes up next if Syria retaliate with conventional weapons, not chemical weapons?

What I mean, how will the dynamics inside Syria, in the middle east change as whole change?

Will the opposition inside Syria keep fighting the Syrian army in the face external aggression?
How about other Arab countries?
Russia, the USA, the Europeans and UN?

There are many questions left unanswered

Re: CNN: Israel Air Strikes in Syria; Suspecting Transfer of Weapons to Terrorist Gro

I don't think Assad wants a two-front war with the revolutionaries at his back and the best military in the region at his front.

My guess is it's more likely Hezbollah will retaliate, either with rocket attacks or a terrorist action. Hopefully, Israel will not escalate its response, assuming the rocket attacks are as ineffective as they usually are.

Of course, if Hezbollah pulls off a major terrorist attack or a rocket attack causes major casualties, then things get bad in a hurry.

As far as the great powers, I don't think they're really in a rush to get involved, although they will probably do some saber rattling. The US is still licking its wounds and winding down its campaign in Afghanistan and can't really afford another war right now. Russia's incursion into Georgia, while successful (at least in the short run) revealed some serious shortcomings in its training, logistics and equipment. The Chinese, I think, have figured out that financing wars is far more profitable than actually fighting them.

More worrisome, I think, is if the Iranians decide to get involved, and the US and the Russians have a chance to go back to their favorite '70s game, regional wars fought by client states. A divided Syria being squabbled over by Israel and Iran (perhaps with the unfortunate Iraqis dragged into the mess) could get ugly.

Just my read on the situation.

He might hope it won't go that way. Once the second front materializes, then some kind of truce on the first front is likely to follow to unite forces against the greater common enemy. This war "substitution" could actually be his best hope.

That may well be his gambit. He's calling the airstrikes "an act of war."

My gut feeling is that play might have worked before armed resistance broke out, but I don't think his domestic opponents are going to rally around him at this point.

Of course, you're right in that it doesn't matter what you or I think. It's what he thinks.

For once I agree with you.

The infidel invader present greater threat than the devil we have and we know, would be the thinking.
This may also stop calls from pother Arab leader who were calling for Assad to leave power.

Russia and China will tone down their recent more muscular statements toward the Syria leader.

Finally, it will become trickier for the US to manage this crisis.
