I voted "private lives . . . " However the way I see it is that also means not jumping through hoops to hide one's sexuality. But yeah, as unpopular as it seems to be - I'm all about peoples' private lives being private. Of course what then would internet bloggers have to write about.

Re: 4 Gay NFL Players to Potentially "Come Out"

It's interesting that we consider the "private lives" when we deal with gay people. We never consider that when we see "heterosexual" players out with their wives and kids. We don't say that when we see pics of the players @ strip clubs or any kind of social setting with an heterosexist implication.

I don't see now why gay people (who choose to come out) should be asked to stay in the closet because it's a "private matter."

And you can be sure that some of them will love the limelight.

I thought that Ayanbadejo and Kordell Stewart (though he's no longer playing) would have come out by now anyway.

You can't have the sweet without the bitter. If you don't want the hassle of not having a private life, don't aim to be a star because the stalking comes with the territory.

One of the best moments that I can recall was when one famous actor (George Clooney?) who didn't want the press following him around stepped out from one of his picture premieres in order to have his picture taken and all of the photographers put their cameras down. Loved it.
Exactly, that's the reason gay male athletes are staying in the closet they know ONCE they come out that's it. You can't go back into the closet once you are out. And once these men are out the media are going to dig, and dig, and dig to find out everything about their personal lives.

The fans and the other guys in the lockeroom are another reason these men won't come out. They just want to play football they don't want to have the intense media attention.

I now think it is not going to happen the media keep on pushing it, but what happens to the gay male athlete AFTER he comes out.

The gay community wants a hero BUT I think people are forgetting about the aftermath. Look at Justin Fashanu, he came out as gay and then he committed suicide.

Re: 4 Gay NFL Players to Potentially "Come Out"

Am I the only one who sees the profitable side of coming out? Let's say you're a tennis player who's barely ranked in the top 100, or some football player who's not the star of the team but only a member of it. You'd be in the limelight and maybe have access to signing contracts you couldn't dream of having if you were just one of the bunch.

I think that is possible but there are still way too many ill feelings about homosexuality for major companies to get behind a gay male athlete. I don't think its right just a reality. Endorsement deals would require a really accomplished athlete or a hell of an Agent IMO for an openly gay athlete.

Re: 4 Gay NFL Players to Potentially "Come Out"

There are several major companies who have endorsement deals with gay people. American Express, JC Penny, Subaru, etc. I think if the gay athlete that comes out is really hot, he will be able to endorse products that are popular with gays and/or liberals. Why couldn't he endorse a fashion brand, Kiehl's, Volkswagen, an underwear brand, a brand of vodka, etc? Gays and people who like gays have a lot of purchasing power. Homophobes tend to be poorer, in general. America's poorest states and its rural areas are the least gay friendly. Certain brands would definitely see gains with a gay spokesperson, especially if it were a small, little-known brand. Imagine all the free publicity they'd get and all the people who would support them because they support gay rights.

I mean, how damn gay are David Beckham's ads. LOL
