Gal had a busy week, but Faye Dunaway she's not.

I really wanted Meryl to win for DWP in 06
but Charlize is clearly the favourite, and her speech was beautiful. Especially at the end

Saw Silverplated Lunch Box this afternoon. It was enjoyable and I liked it quite a bit. I'm wondering if I'm looking for deeper meaning when it's not there because it was up for Oscars, however. I might label is a modern day Touch of Class.

Prometheus Easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen and Theron's character was pretty much useless there.

However, this is my list:

1. Theron was simply unbelievable in Monster. Brilliant performance.

2. Portman was amazing in Black Swan, much better than I expected her to be.

3. Winslet had some better roles, her acting in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was brilliant, her role in The Reader was not that great, but overall I put her in the 3rd place because in general I love her acting.

Meryl... a league of her own.

To think Meryl got an Oscar for The Iron Lady but not for Doubt

Agree on both counts, although you could argue that all characters were useless in this useless movie.

The thing I hate most about it is that by association it defiles Alien, which IMO is one of the all-time great movies in both the SF and horror genres. The alien doesn't need a backstory, he just is.

Re: Who is your favorite Oscar's Best Actress of the last decade?

I watched a couple of Bette Davis DVDs at the weekend: Jezebel, The Letter and Dark Victory: I was in bed with food poisoning!

Sorry, but no one on this list can hold a candle in my opinion. I accept there aren't the roles these days, but if Bette was around these days shed be winning every year!

Monica Seles Superstar. Her fans never forget.

Players I root for now: Heather, Laura, Lucie, Marion, Serena, Simona, Svetlana, Venus, Vika. And Caroline.
Doubles and Mixed Doubles are fun and underrated.

She was so perfect in Jezebel.

She was very good in Of Human Bondage also. One of my favourites.

I'm sure I've seen Touch of Class on TV some years ago - the old Glenda Jackson film? It's funny how stuff just gets regurgitated. I suppose there aren't any real 'new' stories, just updates for 'current' audiences - once you've read the bible and Shakespeare you've read every story there is to tell!

I've not seen Of Human Bondage - its not in the 2 box sets I have so I'll try and find it. I sometimes feel I'm odd for loving the cinema of the 30s - 50s, so its comforting when I hear other people love it too! I think there's more of us than I always realise, given the number of DVDs you can buy. I watched several Mae Wests and Marlene Dietrichs at Christmas and can watch Garbo and Davis over and over. I actually prefer these old films and actors and I love entering their world!

I guess it's a bit like Woody Allen's film Midnight In Paris, some of us hanker for what we think were more interesting times with more interesting people!

I haven't seen Midnight in Paris. But yes, there's a certain filmmaking style that makes them unique and great. I mean I find The Awful Truth to be funnier than almost all movies made these days, It happened one night more romantic than most and Gaslight scarier and done tastefully than all thriller type movies these days. I haven't seen a lot of these films from these decades but I have already seen a lot and what I've seen I've loved so I will just continue watching those.

And these actresses were just better in every way. I mean which actress these days can pull something like this off?

Yes, that is the film. It's not really the same plot, but it's a romance comedy/drama between two misfits. Touch of Class had a more realistic ending.
