Oddsmakers have Canuck as leading pope candidate

Posted: Feb 11, 2013 11:23 AM ET

Paddy Power: Handicapping the next pope (Note:CBC does not endorse and is not responsible for the content of external links.) Irish bookmakers today put Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet as the leading contender to succeed Pope Benedict XVI.

At 5-2 odds early Monday, someone betting two euros ($2.68 Cdn) on Ouellet replacing Benedict would win five euros ($6.70) if the Quebecer were elected at the papal conclave, Bloomberg News reported after Pope Benedict announced Monday he is resigning end of February for health reasons.

Later in the day, the Canadian's odds stretched to 3-1, paying six euros ($8.10) on a two-euro bet.
The Dublin-based bookmaker Paddy Power's odds suggest that the next most likely contenders are African Cardinals Francis Arinze of Nigeria at 4-1 and Peter Turkson of Ghana at 7-2.

Betting on elections and other outcomes has a long history in Ireland and the U.K., where wagering has gone far beyond sporting events. The longest shot on Paddy Power's papal-successor list Monday was rock star activist Bono.

Bono: a long shot for pope.
(J. Scott Applewhite/Associated Press)

He was followed by Rev. Dougal McGuire, a fictional simpleton in the British TV series Father Ted who has only a vague understanding of Roman Catholicism. Both were given 1,000-1 odds of becoming pope.

Ouellet, Canadian head of the Vatican's office for bishops, has experience in Latin America and holds a senior position with the Congregation for Bishops in Rome, which oversees the selection of some bishops. While candidates do not campaign for the papal job, and Ouellet expressed outright reluctance in 2011, he is, at age 68, among the younger potential candidates.

[This article omits that PP also listed odds for British atheist Richard Dawkins.... 666 to 1. Anyhow, why not an Irishman, 2B called Pope Paddy, of course? ]

Talk about being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Shit just hit the fan during his reign There's not much he could have done tbh.

Nonetherless I don't see an African pope. There's too much behind-the-door stuff going on there to allow some underdog to take over. I expect a return of Italians to wash some dirty laundry

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Pope Benedict will tender his resignation on February 28

They are going to have a hard job finding anyone who is untainted by the grim succession of scandals engulfing the Catholic Church ...the numbers who seem to have been involved either directly or in covering it up is staggering. Plus there is little reason to think this hasn't been going on for centuries.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Pope Benedict will tender his resignation on February 28

And what makes you think they'll want to clear the Church's name? I don't think they will and the new Pope will be just some random team player. To think the Catholic Church cares what the people think about them (especially non-Catholics) is very naive

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Pope Benedict will tender his resignation on February 28

I see he (allegedly) said that, during his time as Pope the Lord must have been asleep. Sounds a bit as if he lost some of his faith. I don't agree with much the Catholic Church stands for, but I do feel a little sorry for him on a personal level.

At the same time, the British Cardinal has resigned for improper sexual misconduct. He broke his vows on several occasions not sure with who, male or female. He has apologised (they always do) and is now campaigning for Priests to be able to marry. This leaves no British candidate for Pope - not that a British candidate would have been elected.

I agree. He inherited a terrible situation, and as usual whoever is in Office (be it politics, business or religion) carries the can. Pope John Paul had the benefit of such issues as child abuse not being talked about in the media. As I said in an earlier post, I do feel a little sorry for Benedict.

I agree. I'm neither a member, supporter or defender of the Catholic Church or any religious group! But I still feel a little sorry for someone who has lived his life in an order which is now tarnished and crumbling and which he has lost some faith in. That in itself may be a good thing in that it might wake up people to the reality of any organised groups claiming to be on moral high ground, including politics and politicians, but I can imagine he went through a lot of personal distress. It reminds me of the old Audrey Hepburn film and the one with Deborah Kerr where a nun loses her marbles!

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Pope Benedict will tender his resignation on February 28

What's really interesting is the fact most people talking about Catholic Church are either atheists or non-Catholic Christians. Like someone really believes an every day Catholic cares about the Pope or the Sunday Mass? I for one don't It's easy to pick the nun schools and all the child abuse but the worst perception the Catholics get is the devout image most of the non-Catholics seem to pin on us. This pope was a poor one, way too old when elected but he was the most powerful man out there and had to carry the legacy of the previous one which was somewhat larger than life. You English people should be thankful to escape the Communism like we couldn't. Imagine Oswald Mosley being the King for 50 years I recall him being voted the worst Briton of the XX century

you seem to be more compassionate than the person you feel sorry for
