Forget racism, what an awful and cheesy ad, and to think VW was trying to appeal to men with the new beetles instead of just women.

I don't understand this commercial. Therefore I don't know wich part of it is supposed to be a racist...There are few white dudes, one yellow dude, and... .

Anyway, all cars commercials are retarded and this is no exception (god, I fckn hate cars )

I'm alaways right, even when Im wrong...

Some are finding the ad offensive, with New York Times columnist Charles Blow telling CNN, "It's like blackface with voices." Another CNN commentator said the spot reminded him of Jar Jar Binks, the maligned "Star Wars" character who was criticized as reflecting some racial stereotypes.

Re: Is this ad racially offensive?

I don't think that anything is of itself offensive. People get offended by things but that's on them.

That said, I don't see anything in this that has anything to do with race. Culture yeah and I'll guess it will ruffle some feathers. But I have no issues with it. I only wish they'd got a real Jamaican to do it. (There are white Jamaicans.) I think that would have been funnier.

Oh and yeah the fact that there are white Jamaicans is yet another reason why this ad has nothing to do with race.

Mulder: "So you're agreeing with me?"
Scully "No! You're bat-crap crazy."

It's culturally offensive.

A single flow'r he sent me, since we met./All tenderly his messenger he chose;
Deep-hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet - One perfect rose.
I knew the language of the floweret;/'My fragile leaves,' it said, 'his heart enclose.'
Love long has taken for his amulet/One perfect rose.
Why is it no one ever sent me yet/One perfect limousine, do you suppose?
Ah no, it's always just my luck to get/One perfect rose.

Re: Is this ad racially offensive?

I agree on the culturally offensive. It is a bad commercial, anyway. I barely made it through the one-minute commercial, it was so annoying.

Seriously, all that time spent not talking about how great is the car. Basically, they could have just had someone driving the car while playing "Don't Worry, Be Happy."

I'm pretty sure Supergrunt is making the argument that an ad can be considered racist or culturally offensive even if it seemingly "just" makes fun of an accent. Don't think he's defending the commercial at all...

Excellent point, and now we're talking about almost all consumer advertising by bigname companies, which often seems 2B more about winning an award than (trying to state) why that product is better than its competitors. (Also to buy sponsor parties and skyboxes, etc. for the advertiser).

Let's take Canon cameras, or whatever the Hell brand pays Masha to say "make every shot a power shot". Now TOB may be an accomplished athlete and fairly attractive, but that makes her endorsed brand of camera, or (Motorola, I think) cellphone somehow what one should buy?

Even with stuff in one's own profession, ads are generally BS. Take tennis racquets for example. Besides the obvious BS of paint-job lies about what brand one is using, even where not the case the WTA (or ATP) player has the frame weighted much differently than what the "weekend warrior" buys online.
