Russell Crowe engaged to musician, says publicist
SYDNEY (AP) — Oscar-winning Gladiator star Russell Crowe is to marry his longtime girlfriend, a news report said Saturday.
Crowe's Australian publicist Wendy Day said that the 38-year-old actor will marry Danielle Spencer, the Associated Press reported. No date was announced.
The announcement follows tabloid reports that Crowe, who formerly dated Hollywood actress Meg Ryan, recently bought Spencer a $100,000 (U.S.) diamond ring and asked her to marry him.
Crowe met Spencer, an accomplished musician, after his first attempt to break into the music industry in New Zealand during the late 1980s.
While filming Australian director Peter Weir's film Master and Commander in Mexico over the past several months, Crowe has publicly complained of the time he and Spencer have spent apart.
The New Zealand-born, Australian-raised actor, who last year splashed out about $5 million (U.S.) on media heir Lachlan Murdoch's exclusive Sydney waterfront home, has recently been spending time unwinding on his ranch on Australia's east coast.
His decision to stay there followed a much-publicized brawl with a New Zealand businessman in a London bar last month.
It wasn't the first instance of reported bad behaviour by Crowe.
He reportedly was abusive toward a television executive when the British Broadcasting Corp. edited his acceptance speech out of a broadcast of the British Academy Film Awards in February. He won the best actor award for his role as a schizophrenic scientist in A Beautiful Mind.
Tabloids reported that he swore at the program's director and pushed him against a wall. Crowe reportedly apologized later.
Crowe has starred in films including L.A. Confidential, The Insider, and Gladiator, the sword-and-sandal epic for which he won a best actor Oscar in 2001.
