Lafayette Teen Accused Of Putting Razor Blades In Pies
McDonald's Customer Cut On Lip

UPDATED: 12:03 p.m. CST December 5, 2002

LAFAYETTE, La. -- A Eunice teenager is in custody, accused of putting razor blades in hot apple pies at the McDonald's restaurant where he worked, cutting one customer who bit into one.

Adam Joseph Fontenot, 18, is being held in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on a charge of tampering with consumer products in interstate commerce.

During an appearance in federal court Wednesday, U.S. Magistrate C. Michael Hill ordered Fontenot jailed until a bond hearing next week. But Assistant U.S. Attorney James McManus said the government will ask that Fontenot be given no bood because he is a risk to himself and others.

McManus said Fontenot allegedly slipped the single-edge razors into the pies on Nov. 24, and one was served to a woman who was cut on the lip.

Defense attorney Gerald Block said his client has been hospitalized for psychiatric treatment, once in Lafayette and this year in New Orleans.

If convicted, Fontenot could get up to 10 years in prison or more depending on the severity of the injury resulting from the tampering.

I worked with a lot of tools in food service, but they look like angels compared to this.

I consider myself lucky...

This is one good reason for avoiding fast food restaurants.
