A video showing a young man urinating out of the window of a car - and then being stopped by police - while it hurtles down the Ngauranga Gorge has gone viral.

The video shows a man busting to go to the toilet, barely able to hold on while the driver refuses to pull over.

He eventually decides there's only one thing for it - to relieve himself out the window as the van travels down Wellington's Centennial Highway.

Taking extra precaution, his friends hold his legs to keep him inside the van while the front seat passenger leans across the driver to get a shot of the action going on outside the vehicle.

Unfortunately, they drive straight past a police base and are promptly pulled up.

Two constables handling the incident are shown to be fair and follow protocol when they let the men of with a warning that "you're still really not allowed to get your dick out in public".

The video had received nearly 45,000 views in the week following January 2, when it was posted.

Police association vice presient Stuart Mills said the video is an example of a new level of scrutiny police officers are now under with the advent of smartphones.

Mills said although the language in the video might be a bit rough, the officers were relating to the men well and "hopefully they would remember the treatment they got from those officers when they next thought about doing something that silly".

He said the public's use of technology to film police incidents was also being embraced as a "good thing", given many recordings were able to be used as evidence.

"For example in cases of school bullying and those sorts of things, it's is now much easier to find out exactly what has happened because a member of the public has caught the entire thing," Mills said.

Police spokesman Grant Ogilvie said the possibility of being filmed or recorded was just "part of the modern policing environment" and officers were aware of that.

"They have always worked under the scrutiny of the public and advancements in recording technology is just an extension of that scrutiny.

"Our staff work to the highest professional standards and the possibility of being filmed does not alter how they conduct themselves while going about their lawful duty."

A similar video surfaced just last month where a police officer called Feilding man Dyllan Vaughan a "dickhead" and repeatedly swore at him because he thought Vaughan had pulled the fingers.

Vaughan taped the tirade on his iPhone.

The incident is now under investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Authority.

Thank you for everything Mercedes, now please be nice to Socrates for me, perhaps fetch him a bird or two. We love you, always.
