Re: the 20 biggest grossing movies of 2012

I saw 4 of those: Avengers, Skyfall, Amazing Spider-Man and Hunger Games (not counting Titanic which I've not seen in 3D).

I think I most enjoyed Skyfall.

I only saw 4 out of those 20 movies - Batman Rises, the Hunger Games, Prometheus and Snow White and the Huntsman. Out of those four movies, Batman Rises is the best.

Re: the 20 biggest grossing movies of 2012

Saw all the bolded ones, also giving a quick opinion.

1 Marvel's The Avengers $1,511.8 - How the fuck is this number 1? It was good but this really must be the most overrated movie the last few years, it's as if people were so desperate for a combined superhero movie. Also helps that this was in 3D to rack up the $$$ while most of the movies just below this weren't.

2 The Dark Knight Rises $1,081.0 - Awesome movie. Could have definitely been first if it wasn't for the shooting in the US and if it were in 3D, thankfully Nolan doesn't do any pointless crap like 3D though.

3 Skyfall $1,000.2 - It was good but not that amazing. It's weird because the more I watched of it the more it felt like a weird copy of The Dark Knight.

4 Ice Age: Continental Drift $875.2 - Decent at best, but whatever, I guess loads of families went to see it.

5 The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 $799.2

6 The Amazing Spider-Man $752.2 - A reboot that has the potential to do well but just failed in the end I think. The first Spider-Man was better.

7 Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted $742.1

8 The Hunger Games $686.5 - Not even going to go into this one. Probably the worst movie I've ever seen.

9 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey $685.7 - Great movie and will no doubt rack up some more $ this year. It has it's flaws and is no LOTR but it's still good. Only reason I think some are criticising it so much is because they're comparing it to the LOTR.

10 MIB 3 Sony $624.0

11 Brave $535.4 - Good movie but just didn't have that spark of absolute brilliance that most of the other Pixar movies had.

12 Ted $501.8 - One of the funniest movies of the last few years. Was good.

13 The Intouchables (U.S.-only*) $420.8

14 Prometheus $402.5 - Decent I suppose, had the potential to be good but was just nothing but uninteresting at times.

15 Snow White and the Huntsman $396.4

16 Taken 2 $365.5

17 Dr. Seuss' The Lorax $348.8 - Awful movie. Storyline was a mess too.

18 Titanic 3D $343.6

19 Journey 2: The Mysterious Island $325.9

20 Hotel Transylvania $311.0

Only saw these:
1 Marvel's The Avengers $1,511.8
2 The Dark Knight Rises $1,081.0
3 Skyfall $1,000.2
8 The Hunger Games $686.5
13 The Intouchables (U.S.-only*) $420.8

The Hunger Games is clearly the WORST. Probably the worst film in 2012

There is no way that Hunger Games is worse than Twilight.

Twilight has to be the worst collective of movies ever made.

Re: the 20 biggest grossing movies of 2012

I am a longtime Marvel fan but I do find it baffling how the Avengers is the #1 movie of the year and the most popular Marvel film to date, outstripping the X-Men films, the Hulks, and even the original Spiderman movie (which would have grossed over $1 billion adjusted for inflation btw).

I can only assume it to be the culmination of 10 years worth of work building up the Marvel cinematic franchise.

Also, the Hobbit will still fall well short of LOTR cinema numbers when you consider that even the lowest grossing (FOTR) grossed over $1 billion adjusted for inflation and that 3D viewings didn't artificially bump up the gross in those days.

well, it was huge in the U.S. if you click the link in my original post, you can see the U.S. percentage and the overseas percentage. the hunger games and the lorax have the highest "domestic %" of the total gross, around 60%.

here's the charts for the U.S. only, where the hunger games is no. 3:

Re: the 20 biggest grossing movies of 2012

Hunger Games and the Dark Knight rises were enjoyable.

Ted had its moments but too similar with Family Guy

I thought The Avengers Skyfall and Spiderman were so over rated especially Spiderman, I didn't think anyone would be a worse casting choice than Tobey Maguire

Dark Knight

It'll be interesting to see how they reboot Batman in a few years ( or so ) since Nolan & Bale won't return for future installments

Most of them are lame movies. Prometheus and Intouchables were pretty good.
