Palestine granted non-member observer status in UN.

The resolution passes 138-9 with 41 abstentions.

Palestine may now seek to be recognized by the international court system.

The US and Israel have both violently opposed this step and it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I am inclined to see it as a short-term negative but a long-term step toward a two-state solution.

The "No" votes: US, Israel, Panama, Palau, Canada, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Czech Republic, Micronesia.

France votes "Yes." UK abstains.

It's a pretty pathetic job of arm-twisting by the U.S., frankly. IMHO we have really blown our chance to act as an honest broker and facilitate bringing peace to this part of the world. Hardly anyone in the US remembers when Eisnhower forced the Israelis to pull out of the Sinai in '56.

Re: Palestine granted non-member observer status in UN.

Abstaining:

Albania, Andorra, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Colombia, Croatia, Dem. Rep. of Congo, Estonia, Fiji, Germany, Guatemala, Haiti, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malawi, Monaco, Mongolia, Montenegro, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Poland, Korea, Moldova, Romania, Rwanda, Samoa, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Togo, Tonga, UK, Vanuatu

So it looks like the Palestinians picked up a number of "yes" votes that were earlier expected to abstain from Western Europe, including Italy and Sweden. This is very damaging to US/Israeli hopes that the motion would be carried by a bloc of Arab countries and states with poor human rights records, allowing them to claim the vote lacked legitimacy. Hard to claim the Scandinavians have a poor record on human rights.

Turkey was also a major player in rallying support for the vote, showing how completely Turkish/Israeli relations have soured. And I suspect New Zealand has been waiting for this moment ever since they busted the Mossad...

Wasn't Lester B. Pearson who won a Nobel Peace Prize for the Suez Crisis?

Can't believe Canada voted against along such big world players such as Nauru and Paulu.

Observer status is almost meaningless for a governing authority, and tribunals like the ICC aren't about to start siezing Israeli Cabinet Ministers, Generals, etc. The feigned outrage on this is like when (after a threatened US veto of any Security Council Resolution with possible sanctions) the SC would pass one with the "teeth" removed. (The US would then abstain, and Israel would pretend it had been insulted). The Palestinians should feel like Alec Baldwin's character, in this clip from Working Girl:

Re: Palestine granted non-member observer status in UN.

No, Abbas has said he doesn't anticipate going to the ICC. However, he can go to all the other UN bodies, which does help build legitimacy and allow him to bypass the US and Israelis, who up until now have been able to box the Palestinians in. Of course, it's biggest impact is symbolic. Like I said, it's pretty embarrassing for the US when all our threats and bluster can only round up 9 votes.

Re: Palestine granted non-member observer status in UN.

Palestine has had various forms of observer status ova the years already, and here's the (early 2010) list of entities with observer status. (I hope the IOC recognizes them, like it has Puerto Rico, for example). Hell, even Gorby's failed CIS has observer status.

Why did Czech Republic vote against?

I'd rather Serbia had abstained, but it was NID how that vote would go.

Anyway, hopefully nothing will come out of this and it will indeed end with "much ado about nothing". Two-state solution is not possible if Palestinians keep throwing bombs into Israel.
