Israeli troops kill a 95-year-old woman

By Mohammed Assadi

Ramallah, West Bank - Israeli soldiers on Tuesday shot dead a 95-year-old Palestinian woman who was taking a taxi home after a medical check-up in the West Bank city of Ramallah, Palestinian witnesses and medics said.

They said troops opened fire on the van the woman was riding in when it tried to bypass rubble that Israeli forces had used to block the road between Ramallah and her home village of Atara.

Israeli military sources said soldiers shot at the tyres of a Palestinian vehicle travelling on a prohibited road north of Ramallah after it ignored calls to halt. The sources said they did not know of any injured or dead.

Israel has re-occupied most West Bank cities
Medics said the woman, Fatima Hassan, who was on her way home from a medical clinic, was hit by a bullet in the back and that two other people in the taxi were wounded, one of them critically.

"We condemn this war crime of killing in cold blood a 95-year-old woman and we hold Israel fully responsible," Palestinian cabinet minister Saeb Erekat told Reuters.

Israel has re-occupied most West Bank cities and sealed off their main entrances, funnelling all movement through army checkpoints, following a wave of Palestinian suicide bombings in the Jewish state.

The Palestinians condemn the military blockade as collective punishment. Israel says it is acting in self-defence.

Israeli-Palestinian violence has surged in recent days despite calls by the United States for calm in the region as it seeks Arab support for a possible war on Iraq.

Criticised for not warning Israeli tourists
At least 1 693 Palestinians and 668 Israelis have been killed since a Palestinian uprising for independence began in September 2000 after peace talks broke down.

The Israeli army said it arrested 12 Palestinians across the West Bank on Tuesday in a sweep targeting militants suspected of planning and launching suicide attacks.

The army said the suspects were rounded up in the Bethlehem, Hebron and Nablus areas.

Israel faces attacks at home and abroad

Twin attacks on an Israeli-owned hotel and an Israeli airliner in Mombasa, Kenya, last week raised the spectre of Israelis being targeted abroad as well.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has promised to hunt down those responsible for the suicide bombing on the hotel that killed three Israelis, 10 Kenyans and the three assailants.

Both Israel and the United States suspect the al-Qaeda network of being behind the bombing and an almost simultaneous failed missile attack on an Israeli airliner.

Israeli military intelligence, criticised for not warning Israeli tourists they were at risk in Kenya, say they had advance warning al-Qaeda operatives were preparing for a possible attack in the east African nation before last week's attacks.

But a military intelligence officer told a parliamentary committee on Monday that Israel had received no specific information that Mombasa or Israelis would be targeted, parliament spokesperson Giora Pordes said on Tuesday.

"They had information that various people were collecting information in order to carry out terrorist attacks but not against what or whom," Pordes cited the chief researcher for military intelligence, Brigadier-General Yossi Kuperwasser, as telling a parliamentary committee.
