Re: The Casual Vacancy

I'm just about to finish it. About 8% to go.

I wouldn't say I'm adoring it, but it's pretty enjoyable; there are some memorable characters and some good quotes

Samantha Stosur

Svetlana Kuznetsova|Duan Ying-Ying|Francesca Schiavone|Zhang Shuai|Sloane Stephens|Ashleigh Barty
Andy Murray|Stanislas Wawrinka|Dominic Thiem|Juan Martin Del Potro|Thanasi Kokkinakis

Re: The Casual Vacancy

Some parts are brilliant, others don't really work. I think it's the clash between a very descriptive writing style and the hard reality of life in the book that makes it sometimes struggle. Also, almost every character is unlikeable, which for me makes it a very entertaining read but decreases the overall warmth we've grown accustomed to with Harry Potter.

I do think the book was a very bold move and I loved it.

i loved it too!
i thought the plot and her writing style weren't great. but the way she simultaneously developed around ~20 unique characters was pretty amazing.

Re: The Casual Vacancy

Finally done reading it. Obviously so different from her Harry Potter but not disappointing at all! I loved it! She is really such a genius in creating so many interesting characters and telling their stories... Nice one! Like someone else said the way she simultaneously developed around ~20 unique characters was amazing.

Those sexual things and sex scenes aroused me too

Vikram Jawanda is fine

I kinda like Kay Bawden as well, I think she is fine. The rest of the characters have so many flaws and mistakes, it became so hilarious sometimes The Weedon family cracked me up so many times.. those fights between Krystal and her mom Terri

I enjoyed it but it's a very sad book. She likes her tragedies does JK. Can't wait for the BBC adaptation in 2014

Re: The Casual Vacancy

I just finished reading it and I must say I'm really impressed. Rowling's ability to create such interesting characters and delve into the human psychology is remarkable. She proved that she is an excellent writer

Re: The Casual Vacancy

I liked it and it was interesting how it revolved around so many characters, of course the Daily Mail hated it, I believe some columnist called it socialist propaganda.

I also liked how she gave a lot of characters endings I wasn't expecting, I'm so use to seeing characters nowadays be predictable in TV, films and books but this seemed a lot more real.

I like Kay, Gaia and the Indian daughter. I was never clear though was Kay supposed to be attractive I initially assumed she was but later descriptions weren't as clear. I hated that douche Kay dated, such a fucking loser Also Fats was such a weird character I thought, I couldn't imagine him as a real person but everyone else I could.

Re: The Casual Vacancy

Shirley Mollison was one of the least likeable characters in a book ever. In fact I don't believe there was a likeable character in this book ( apart from the Indian girl.
And Samantha Mollison was hilarious, a real train wreck

Re: The Casual Vacancy

I know, she totally shatters that whole MILF stereotype some in the media like to portray, she just represented a desperate middle aged woman who can't realise she's getting older. Thats why I loved the realness of it, no flowery bullshit.
