Nadzeya Ostapchuk of Belarus first casualty of Olympic drug tests.

She lost her gold medal for doping.

The Belarusian shot putter Nadzeya Ostapchuk has been stripped of her Olympic gold medal after failing a doping test.

The New Zealander Valerie Adams will now be awarded the gold, Russia's Evgeniia Kolodko will take the silver and China's Lijiao Gong will win the bronze.

Ostapchuk was tested twice, once on 5 August and again the following day after she had finished first in the women's shot put. The IOC says both samples indicated the presence of metenolone, which is classified as an anabolic agent under the 2012 Prohibited List.

The shot putter has been retrospectively disqualified from the event, has been excluded from the Games, and will have her Olympic accreditation removed immediately as well as losing her gold medal.
I was really suspicious when I watched the shot put final. We all know she's a good shot putter but her performance definitely looked 'enhanced' .

Glad she got caught.
A shame she deprived Adams and the bronze medal winner too of having their moment on the podium during the Games.

I agree with the OP. While I am largely dubious about Belarussian throwers, I wasn't as suspicious of Ostapchuk as I am with some of their other team members...until the last three or four weeks. She threw 21.58m put in her homeland (hasn't really been achieved since the days of the Iron Curtain) and then she was churning out 21m-plus throws like a machine in the Olympic final even though she'd never broken 21m outside of BLR until London.

Pleased Valerie gets the gold. A shame she couldn't do a victory lap knowing she was the winner but I'm sure she can do a three-peat in Rio.

and this is what turns people off the olympics completely. sure, it might not be the 100m final, but i expect plenty of people tuned in to watch the shot put, but what they saw was pretty irrelevant due to cheaters. just leaves a sour taste in the mouth.

I'm really happy for Valerie

Ostapchuk to think she was crying so vehemently when she won the gold....through doping

now i gotta rewatch the shot put final to see her performance again

But it's funny how much humor the news has generated in BLR twitter. LOLs far and wide. We fail and then we laugh.
