The "killer" lyric in love songs

Post the phrase(s) that really zeros in on the message of your favorite love songs (especially heartbreak and unrequited love).

Please don't post the whole damn song.

My first three:

"I can't make you love me if you don't. You can't make your heart feel something it won't." (Bonnie Raitt)

"Are you gonna stay with the one who loves you? Or are you going back to the one you love?" (Glenn Frey)

"I could have told you, he'd hurt you. He'd love you awhile then desert you.
If only you'd asked, I could have told you so.
I could have saved you some crying. I could have told you he was lying.
But you were in love and didn't want to know.
If only you'd asked, I could have told you so." (Old jazz standard)

For Dante, it follows then, that the only way to get into Hell is to insist upon it. One must deliberately exclude himself from grace by hardening his heart against it. Hell is what the damned have actively and insistently wished for.

The man that hath no music in himself, nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds is fit for treasons, stratagems and spoils. The motions of his spirit are dull as night and his affections dark as Erebus. Let no such man be trusted. Shakespeare

Re: The "killer" lyric in love songs

I guess I have a cynical view right now given that I'm experiencing that whole unrequited love thing. There's nothing worse than having hope dangled in front of your face and watching it being cut shorter and shorter over time.

Roy Orbison - In Dreams

"In dreams I walk with you,
In dreams I talk to you,
In dreams you're mine all the time...

Too bad it only seems
It only happens in my dreams
Only in dreams
In beautiful dreams."

Tim Buckley - Song to the Siren (This Mortal Coil's version is much more emotional)

"For you sing, 'Touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow:
O my heart, O my heart shies from the sorrow.'

Well, I'm as puzzled as the newborn child
I'm as riddled as the tide:
Should I stand amid the breakers?
Or should I lie with death my bride?"

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Forever

"Forever just one more tie then never
This is the last string to sever

We couldn't stay together
This couldn't last forever

This is the last string to sever
I have lost you for ever and ever"

Daniela Hantuchova.

Re: The "killer" lyric in love songs

Where Do You Start? (Check out the Kenny Rankin version on YouTube)

Where do you start? Do you allow yourself a little time to cry?
Or do you close your eyes and kiss it all goodbye? I guess you try.

And though I don't know where and I don't know when I'll find myself in love again:
I promise there will always be a little place no one will see,

A tiny part deep in my heart that stays in love with you.
(Killer )

Lush Life (Natalie Cole's version on the Tube. Even Queen Latifah did a passable version.)

I'll forget you, I will.
While yet you are still burning inside my brain.

Romance is mush, stifling those who strive.
I'll live a lush life in some small dive.

And there I'll be while I rot with the rest of those whose lives are lonely too.

(How on earth does a 16 year old Billy Strayhorn write these lyrics?)

All of Adele's songs make me want to kill myself, so all her lyrics are 'killer'. Does that count?

No!

Re: The "killer" lyric in love songs

It's old and it's country

"That's As Close As I'll Get To Lovin' You" by Aaron Tippin:

...But I can sing this song to everybody
And pretend it's not about you
That's as close as I'll get to loving you
Even though there's nothing else I'd rather do...

Re: The "killer" lyric in love songs

Every time I tried to tell you, the words just came out wrong.
So I have to say I love you in a song.

The very late Jim Croce.

Re: The "killer" lyric in love songs

"Shatter" by Liz Phair:
something about just being with you
slapped me right in the face, nearly broke me in two
it's a mark I've taken hard
and I know I will carry it for a long, long time

"Go Long" by Joanna Newsom:
I will give you a call for one last hurrah
and if this tale is tall, forgive my scrambling
but you keep palming along the wall
moving at a blind crawl, but always rambling
wolf spider, crouch in your funnel nest
if I knew you once, now I know you less
in the sinking sand where we've come to rest
have I had a hand in your loneliness?

"Bachelorette" by Bjork:
I'm a tree that grows hearts
one for each that you take
you're the intruder hand
I'm the branch that you break

Bitttchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh You Better Pay It Honey! The Devil Is A Liar!!!!! Bitches Get Interviews And Shit? Where They Do That At Honey? Girls Are Late Honey!!!! The Queen Needs To Get Into It Honey Cause The Girls Is Late Out Here! Yes Honey Im Throwing Epic Shade!

Management!

Björk - Immature

How could I be so immature?
To think he could replace,
The missing elements in me.
How extremely lazy of me.

How could I be so immature?
How could I be so immature?

Re: The "killer" lyric in love songs

The entire song speaks to me, but specifically the way Want To by Sugarland ends does it for me

We could keep things just the same
Leave here the way we came with nothing to lose
But I don't want to, if you don't want to

But I want to
But I want you
