CUTTING FOOD ASSISTANCE...Republicans are just PURE evil!!!

I never thought I'd live to see the day when our elected officials, who are sworn to represent and protect ALL Americans, would stoop so low as to overtly ATTACK those very people!!!

This article was updated today, and I'd imagine that the author (being an advocate for the poor) is no more shocked and saddened than anyone else with a heart.

"MORE"...PROOF THAT REPUBLICANS HATE AMERICA!!...AND THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.
Their actions in Congress (and the Senate, on past votes) reflect this.

Cuts in food assistance for the poor are simply unacceptable

In case you missed it, our elected officials voted recently to make more Americans go hungry -- denying reality, evading responsibility and spurning morality.

Charged with finding $42 billion in cuts to domestic programs, the House voted to cut $33 billion of food assistance from our nation's hungry -- children, seniors, working families and the disabled.

That's billion -- with a B.

Some who voted for this cut justify it by arguing that the nation's poor have food banks on which to rely.

Whether these statements are simply naive or maliciously misleading, one thing is certain: They're false.

The burden of $33 billion in federal assistance being shifted to a network of nonprofits is nothing short of preposterous.

That $33 billion is equal to the budget of nearly every food bank in America, many times over. This isn't a cut -- it's an amputation.

Long ago, we rejected the idea that anyone should go hungry in the richest country on Earth. If this cut takes effect, fewer families will be able to put food on the table; the quality of the food they have will decrease; and problems ranging from academic failure to malnutrition will increase nationwide.

And our neighborhood grocery stores? They will be out $33 billion, too, because that's where that assistance is spent.

But the message our representatives are sending is, "That's OK."

That's unacceptable.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program -- CalFresh in California, formerly known as food stamps -- is one of the most effective federal programs ever created. It lifts people out of poverty and provides a crucial bridge during hard times.

This recession has been long and hard on those already vulnerable. We've been incredibly lucky that our community has stepped up in great numbers to donate and volunteer to help us meet the need.

But our neighbors already line up for up to two hours for simple staples such as bread, potatoes and onions.

Nearly one in four children in America are fed by SNAP. Seniors face the choice between food and medicine. Parents are skipping meals so their children can eat. Food banks need more supply, not more demand.

There's a legitimate debate going on in Congress about whether millionaires should be required to pay a minimum tax rate -- meanwhile, our nation's poorest and most vulnerable are cast aside with little fanfare.

The American people deserve a budget that reflects our values. Seventy-seven percent of Americans believe that cutting SNAP is the wrong way to reduce spending.

We agree.

Congress is elected by us -- but many aren't living up to their one and only task of representing us. Let's make sure they don't get away with taking food off our neighbors' tables in the name of fiscal responsibility.

Suzan Bateson is executive director of the Alameda County Community Food Bank.

Wow...

All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wonder are lost. The old that is strong does not wither, deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall shall be woken, a light from the shadows shall spring. Renewed shall be blade that was broken. The crownless again shall be king

Maya Angelou said when people tell you who they are believe them. Romney who is now the leader of the Republican party stated clearly that he is not concern about the poor. The Republicans have been sending that message since the '60s and have been fighting to get rid of ALL the social safety nets ever since.

There will even be more drastic cuts if the GOP have their way. Check out Paul Ryan's plan to see where all the drastic cuts are while corporate subsidies remain, an increase for military spending and even more tax cuts for the wealthy.

How can anyone with a conscience can do this and then claim to be the most religious party is just a beyond my comprehension. Yet working people continue to think the Republicans are serving their interest. Woe the ignorance of some people

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the SILENCE OF OUR FRIENDS. MLK

That's surprising even for them, they disgust me.

The belief that man is an irresolute creature pulled this way and that by two forces of equal strength, alternately winning and losing the battle for his soul; the conviction that human life is nothing more than an uncertain struggle between heaven and hell; the faith in two opposed entities, Satan and Christ - all this was bound to engender those internal discords in which the mind, excited by the incessant fighting, stimulated as it were by the constant promises and threats, ends up by giving in and prostitutes itself to whichever of the two combatants has been more obstinate in its pursuit. Life isn't black and white, it's gold.

Conservatives are generally heartless They always have been a Social Darwinist..
They just tend to lack compassion.

France? When the Popular Front succeeded and formed a gov, there was a MASSIVE exodus of money..when the gov needed exactly those money to resuscitate the economy. For them, class interest always trumps national interest.

I understand that conservatives can be horrible, but you can't generalize them like that. I'm a republican, but I would never do that.

Yeah, ok, MANY conservatives tend to be that way then History is replete with such instances..Andrew Mellon in the Hoover gov. didn't try anything to lessen the misery of the Great Depression..he thought 'let it be' was the best 'action', classic laissez-faire

1) $34BN over a decade. $8BN next yr.
2) considering how much it has grown in the last few yrs, that wouldn't even restore it to what it was in 2010.

part of it is about restricting eligibility, which will hopefully curtail the mind-boggling amount of fraud in the program.

purrrrrre evil!!!!!!

no really, the military budget should be cut before food stamps. but think critically about what's happening before jumping into an emotional tizzy.
