WTH...!!!! ... is the deal with US teachers nowadays?! <vomit>

I damn near 'raged' after watching this video and reading the article.
I mean, seriously...I just don't understand how ANY teacher can claim to be a "leader" when they commit disgusting affronts such as this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here's hoping that this teacher gets canned...tarred...and...feathered!

Missouri mom: Kindergartner humiliated after being denied bathroom break

Quote:
"You don't even treat a dog that way," said Lisa Skidmore, whose 6-year-old daughter was forced to sit in her own filth in her kindergarten classroom when her teacher forbade a bathroom break during a test. KYTV's Sara Forhetz reports.
By Sevil Omer, msnbc.com

A Missouri mother says her 6-year-old daughter was humiliated after she was denied a bathroom break in her kindergarten class and was forced to sit in her diarrhea during a test session at school.

"They didn't even bother trying to clean her up or anything. She still had poop, diarrhea poop, coming out the back, up her front, down her legs," said the mother, Lisa Skidmore of Washburn, Mo., told KY3-TV on Tuesday.

The incident happened at Southwest Elementary School in Washburn, Mo., where children were participating in the Missouri Assessment Program tests; the state standardized testing required by law.

While tests are not administered until the third grade, the child's kindergarten teacher was sticking to MAP testing guidelines in efforts to simulate the stringent rules to prepare students for what's to come, School District Superintendent Bob Walker told KY3-TV on Tuesday.

"Bottom line, we regret what happened," Walker told KY3-TV.

Walker, who was contacted by msnbc.com on Thursday, said he met with the child’s parents on Wednesday.

“From our view point, this is a confidential matter and in regards to the media, we want it to remain that way,” Walker told msnbc.com.

In earlier interviews, Walker said he instructed teachers to be more sensitive to situations that might arise during tests.

"I don't want this to happen to any other kid. That's the point of this: I don't want this ever happening,” Walker said, according to KY3-TV.

The child’s mother said she has asked school officials for an explanation and a policy change.

"They told me that the teacher had asked her to go to the restroom before testing time," Skidmore said, according to KY3-TV.

Skidmore says her daughter was forced to sit in the class for the remainder of test time, about 15 minutes, then she was called after the test, and it was a 20-minute drive to the school, according to KY3-TV.

No one helped to clean up her child, she said. A teacher, however, did give the child a trash bag to wrap around herself, Skidmore said.

"You don't even treat a dog that way!" Skidmore told KY3-TV.

The teacher needs to be fired immediately and prohibited from teaching in the future.

Absolutely!

What's really telling in this case is the fact that there is no mention whatsoever about the teacher being reprimanded.

Also, if I were the parents, I'd pursue Child Abuse (more specifically...Child Endangerment) charges against the teacher, and negligence charges against the school (and possibly the school district) until they changed policies.

I would absolutely sue the teacher and the school if that happened to my daughter.

The belief that man is an irresolute creature pulled this way and that by two forces of equal strength, alternately winning and losing the battle for his soul; the conviction that human life is nothing more than an uncertain struggle between heaven and hell; the faith in two opposed entities, Satan and Christ - all this was bound to engender those internal discords in which the mind, excited by the incessant fighting, stimulated as it were by the constant promises and threats, ends up by giving in and prostitutes itself to whichever of the two combatants has been more obstinate in its pursuit. Life isn't black and white, it's gold.

I like to blame the victim. Maybe she was a brat who had it coming, or was disruptive by crying wolf about the potty and they called her bluff on the wrong day. She might have crapped in her pants on purpose in a power play to get the teachers in trouble. It oddly backfired.

They gave her a trash bag, it wasn't like they totally didn't care.

When I was in elementary school a female classmate had sort of the same problem. L.N.(her initials) asked our teacher three times to be excused to go to the bathroom. The teacher said no because we had not too long before had a bathroom break.

After the third time, L.N. pushed her panties to the side and pissed on the floor. Mrs. J. was too through. Needless to say the class had absolutely no decorum for the rest of the day (which was only about 30 minutes). From that point on whenever L.N. said she had to go, she was allowed to go.

Somehow, I don't believe 6 year olds to be that calculating.
However, let's say (for the sake of argument) you are correct. If so, wouldn't that child be an enormous distraction to the other children taking their tests?
Especially those children occupying seats immediately next to her?!

And btw, it's a well known fact that diarrhea is VERY caustic (...and can burn the skin if left alone).

This is easily one of those cases where a teacher's personal judgement & sensibilities were sorely lacking.

It reflects badly on one teacher, but not all teachers. Right now, at least in my part of the world, teachers are dealing with shrinking paychecks, longer hours, bigger classrooms and a culture that blames them for the failure of students ranging from recent immigrants to special needs children to everybody in between. Yet most of the teachers my kid interacts with continue to do a great job of inspiring and educating their charges.

HOWEVER...

in such a case as this, that teacher needs to be severely disciplined. That behavior is inexcusable. I mean as a parent/coach/person who officiates sports with kids that age, 90 percent of the time they don't tell you that they have to use the restroom until they are seconds from a crisis. I never understood why some teachers think it's a vast conspiracy to ruin their classroom.

How can a teacher do this to a six-year-old is beyond me (I know kids nowadays are pretty feral, but as a teacher you should be professional)

My guess would be that the teacher was focused on other things and didn't realize the child had gone in her undies until after the test was completed. I can see that happening: - teacher thinks the child is just trying to get out of the situation, denies the bathroom break with no ill-intent, and is intent on ignoring more interruptions from the child. The child could also have gone partly out of spite.

The only thing that puzzles me is why someone didn't help the child clean up herself up afterwards.

It's easy to pick out an incident that went badly awry and focus on that. You say "what's the deal with US teachers nowadays." I think that in part your reaction is an example of part of the problem. If a teacher makes a misstep then all their good work is suddenly overlooked. And in anything strange, there's a rush to judgement. Yes, this teacher might suck but there is little in this initial report to determine that.

Scully "No! You're bat-crap crazy."

I think if I'd crapped in my pants, they would have washed me up or helped me wash up and gotten me a change of clothes, this is a 6-year old. Just giving the girl a garbage bag to wrap herself in, while hilarious, is actually pretty cold. I did go to school a long time ago, but teachers really cared about children then and would not have let the girl leave school like this. Even if the teacher made an honest mistake about the bathroom, they should not have let the girl walk around like that.

Teachers make little money today and resources are stretched as state budgets are stressed. Maybe they just have too many children to watch or the quality of what is hired has gone down.

Boo-hoo

What actually upsets me is how this has been turned into a huge media exercise with everyone saying "the right things"

Much stinkier than diarrhea-pants Skiddy was during the test.

What I found (slightly) more frustrating is the fact that practice for standardized testing is being implemented this early .
