Robbie Williams Nearly Dies (Not Really...)

Robbie Williams nearly killed off the character of 'Robbie' in a bid to totally reinvent himself.

Speaking frankly during last night's MSN webchat, a flu-ridden Robbie spoke about bringing "Robbie back from the doors of death" during his recuperation break in LA.

"At the end of last year I was going to kill this character off I'd created," said Robbie. "If you look back through your rock n'roll history books, people tend to fell a bit crap about themselves if they work themselves into the ground."

He continued: "('Escapology') was going to be the greatest hits. I was going to kill Robbie off and join a band and do something completely different.

"With the time off, a few early nights, some square meals and a great album, I decided to ditch the plans and stay being me. And I'm really enjoying it. I've escaped from killing something off that I enjoy."

During the chat - that took place at Robbie's London home - he also talked about media attention, life in the spotlight, the new album, recording in the nude and much more.

His new album 'Escapology' is out this week.
