“We want to welcome fans from around the world as friends in 2006 and celebrate a unique FIFA World Cup in Germany,” said Franz Beckenbauer, President of the Organising Committee. “We believe that the new emblem perfectly expresses our philosophy of having a buoyant, cheerful and carefree tournament in 2006.”
Besides Beckenbauer, numerous other well-known public figures attended the event. Otto Schily, Germany’s minister of the interior, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter, Germany’s national team coach Rudi Völler, Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, President of the German Soccer Association DFB, and Oliver Kahn, goalkeeper of the German national team.
London-based agency Whitestone and abold, a Munich based agency, had worked on the emblem since September 2001, finally discarding a bowl-shaped fish in favour of the smiling faces.
“Our goal was to convey, via a symbol, the incomparable emotions that can only be evoked by football,” explained Andreas Abold, proprietor of abold.
The official emblem will be available for purposes of the media or advertisement through an internet portal. FIFA has set up an online order service, offering exclusive access to its FIFA Digital Archive, which incorporates 1, 200 different colour versions of the “Celebrating Faces”.
