I come from an Island conflicted with beauty and suffering; where sun and rain are the extremes (with an occasional December breeze); where the mountains are blue and green and smoky in the distance.

An Island that offers just as many rum bars as churches; where summers are eternal; where fruits are everlasting; where a rainy day means staying home; where the sound of music and the smell of food are equally potent in the air.

An Island where children frolick freely along the avenues; where neighbours frequently come over to borrow a spoon of salt or sugar; where fathers gather around the television to watch cricket; where brothers play soccer in the fields; where sisters tease each other on the makeshift swings; where mothers hide the chocolate for a sweet surprise; where

I should stop now, or else I'll cry ...

I'm from an island. It's overcrowded by about 59,999,999 million people.

It's run by a meglomaiac, and our only land contact is to a country that we don't like and they don't like us. And this tunnel allows (illegally) the population to increase further, many of which aim in life is to release chemical bombs into our underground system.

and where they produce desolation, they call it peace

Not true - I do like some English people... And I love much of England.

There is something so poetic about islands, universes in their own right. Malta was enchanting. I was almost disappointed to see that Korcula was so close to the mainland, but that "mainland" is almost an island itself, and Korcula really is an island to the extent that it is, indeed, a world of its own.

I'm not from an island, though I did stay over on one of Toronto's islands for a weekend, during a music festival. I recall that Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and others were headlining.

Most of Toronto's islands are parkland, currently accessible only by ferry boat or water taxi.

There is, though, a small commuter airport and nude beach at one end. There is a small residential community at the other end.

In the middle there's a small amusement park. There's a firehall --- with a very cute little fire engine --- and a police station etc.

Once a year my church borrows the little Anglican church that is in about the middle of the islands, and has a picnic and service there. It's quite nice.
