BRITISH LADS MORE LIKELY TO SETTLE DOWN

BRITISH LADS MORE LIKELY TO SETTLE DOWN

YOUNG British men are not the "lads" they think they are, a Europe-wide survey on families shows.

British men in their mid-20s are five times more likely than Italian men to have settled down and set up home with girlfriends or wives, research has found.

Professor Richard Berthoud, co-author of the report, said: "You may well say these figures show lads and ladettes are very much an 'early form' and people still settle down remarkably quickly."

Some 42% of British men aged between 23 and 27 have settled down in the marital home or are cohabiting, compared with 9% in Italy.

In all countries women leave home before men, with the average age for British women being 21.2 compared with 20 in Finland and over 27 in Italy.

British women also have babies earlier than their European counterparts, not just in teenage years but throughout their early 20s. Half of all British women are mothers by the age of 27, three years earlier than in the Netherlands and Italy.

The survey of 153,000 people across the European Union was conducted by the Institute for Social and Economic Research based at the University of Essex.

It also shows families varied across the continent, with Catholic southern European countries, and Ireland, having bigger extended families and children, especially males, generally spending more years at home.

People in Catholic countries also generally leave home and live with partners later in life, compared to northern Europeans and Scandinavians.

In all countries, just living with a partner is around three times more common among people in their 20s than among those in their 30s, and nearly twice as common in the 30s as in the 40s.

It's too soon to aim for peace. Aim for better conflict management.
