Re: Downton Abbey Appreciation Thread - Series 3 OUT in America

just finished watching season 3, and while i thought the first few episdoes were okay (liked shirley maclaine), the last two (including the christmas one) were terrible and an all-time-low for the series.

i don't mind it's soapiness, but then the characters and the stories between them have to be strong and interesting. there were soooo many flawed or even pointless storylines this season, it's hard to know where to begin with: bates in the prison, daisy having a crush on albert, ethtel, the new maid's flinch with branson, bates stepping fighting so much for barrow, resulting in him not leaving etc. etc. in the end i was left with the impression that the only way the writers were able to induce drama and thrill into the story was by birth or death, which is extremely cheap. killing off sibyll and matthew in the same season was a very, very bad idea.

i'm really not sure i'll watch another season.

I agree. The Bates in Prison part was poorly written, filmed, and handled.

Thomas won't be the same without O'Brien as his foil!

Some comments on the Daily Mail's site saying "Jazz singer, we all know why he was brought in" Typical middle class racism.

Tom Cullen was so hot in Weekend interesting to see him in something like this now.

Problem is that there is only one writer. Compared to a US series where there are numerous writers who can bring in fresh ideas. It often happens in the UK where one writer is common, series lose their way, Monarch Of The Glen being another example. It was excellent for a few series then went downhill rapidly.

I like how the series is going to pan out.

Good wrap-up for O'Brien.

Re: Downton Abbey Appreciation Thread - Series 4 is back.

I'm amazed this tat is still running and passing itself off as 'drama'. It's fantasist soap opera in period costume. The scripts are laughable and storylines childish and telegraphed while the acting has become plain ham and creepy. It makes the original Upstairs Downstairs seem like Ibsen.

Re: Downton Abbey Appreciation Thread - Series 4 is back.

I found the season premier somewhat lackluster. The nanny storyline was very odd in my opinion. Thomas is accidentaly right about her and then if she hates Sybill being a "half breed" why then did she take such an attitude with Thomas when he said hello to her. I dunno seemed weird.

Recycling maids now? This Edna chick showing up is kind of lazy why not bring in a new girl who could also add drama. Also why would Edith's fella pick Germany over Portugal or somewhere else to resolve his marriage, as she put it they were Europe's most hated race then and wasn't it difficult to obtain German citizenship if not ethnically German in those days?

Overall it underwhelmed me.

I agree with that assessment, I played Temple Run midway through this episode :lol

Why is Moseley becoming a prominent character? Who on earth cares about Daisy or Ivy's love lives

Re: Downton Abbey Appreciation Thread - Series 4 is back.

wtf with Anna getting raped and Mrs. Hughes helping her to cover it up? ANd is Edith going to move to Germany and become or get persecuted by Nazis in a later season?
