Jamaicans surely lead in that regard ... but its not peculiar to them.

If not, why are cafes in a college heavy city starting to avoid playing it?
Re: cafes in college towns, if they played MAINSTREAM music (regardless of what decade it comes from) then I'd consider those particular cafes quite lame. Rihanna in a college cafe? Seriously?

Since you're not 30, you have no point of ref of what I'm talking about. You'll see and, oh by the way, look at Non-Tennis: there's a thread about Aqua. Somebody's feeling nostalgic (old).

Except for Adele, yes, contemporary main stream music mostly sucks. Of course there are exceptions, but there's too many autotuned handsome kids who are simply the product of a label.

On the other hand, you have your Arctic Monkeys, Arcade Fire and The Strokes, which in my opinion will be remembered for a long time.

Never has pop music been so aggressively biased in promoting sex. Listen to nearly any pop song, and it's literally loaded with sexual reference, and most of it is so crude. It's not even vaguely imaginative.

I mean a song called 'S&M' is a deplorable example for children listening. It's just so awful.

All the lyrics are pretty much "I'm gonna make you and your mom wet".

Does contemporary popular/mainstream music mostly suck?

Yes. It sucks live & it sucks from the records. It's just one big neverending cliche. Hate it.

I think that's it. Like someone else posted in this thread there's no innovation. It's stagnant. For example. Adele who tops the charts this year is a very good, maybe even great, singer but the production of her stuff is generic and weak. No spark. Some of the other chart-topping production is great when you're juiced up and on the dance-floor but that's about it.

Add: A friend of mine claims it isn't just in college-centric cafes - says many people in their mid-teens are listening to older stuff.

Mulder: "So you're agreeing with me?"
Scully "No! You're bat-crap crazy."

Are they better? To me, that song you mentioned sucks. Big time. The thing is that songs are still being made with production that is pretty similar to that. Like I said - stagnant.

I love pop music! Only to get drunk too. Or when driving to work because I want to be in good spirits.

To me, the mid-'90s was when music in general took a huge downturn. Sure, there's always been crap, but overall, this was when the vast majority became super-rushed, shoddily-produced, fast-food quality music. Make the quick buck and get out. Unfortunately, it's a formula that works for the performers, producers and record companies, since the public eats it up. Again, just like fast food.

"Another Night" by Real McCoy is the sort of 90s dance/house tune that's formula is being repeated ad-nauseum on the radio today actually.

Totally! *NSYNC, BSB and Britney were being groomed and the engineers took the reins and told studio musicians to eff off for good.

That sound was already long in place since the disco/new wave days but yeah Real McCoy took it to a level of sucktivity.

The difference is you get about 10 years out and you can start to tell what was dreck and what was decent.

30 years out you start to listen to all the crap because it makes you feel young again, but you go "Geez, i can't believe I ever owned this crapass album/CD.

Oh, BTW, this is an album:

It had one of these inside:

Don't even get me going on these:
Hahaha! Hey I had 45's by The Archies, Bo Donaldson, Paper Lace, Bay City Rollers and The Knack. I even have mp3's for some of 'em. Sure, I had LP's by Hendrix, CCR, Zeppelin, the Stones but the bubblegum crap was also part of growing up way back when. You had me cracking up, Max. Now, excuse me while I go listen to Bread and Terry Jacks. hahaha
