Re: Does contemporary popular/mainstream music mostly suck?

Of course it does, and yet people are still buying this crap. Nowadays it is generic dance track with lyrics that are in just about every song, such as "Pump it up", "make it louder" and "In this club..."

A lot of it sucks but like people have said, you find "treasures" or they find you (if you listen to NON-mainstream outlets i.e. stations/sites that do NOT play the sucky ppl).

True. Every gen will experience this. I can already hear the 90's babies complaining in 2020 how no one's as good as Beyonce.

Not really. Generations experience that when there's a real change in the type of music. My folks like a fair amount of current mainstream music. Personally I've never been much for the mainstream - every once in a while something will be there but that's rare.

The point of the thread is this: even a few years ago these cafes were playing current stuff. Now they aren't? Why?

That "Life's Too Good" is one of my all-time favorites. I even think Bjork's work was better with them (I know that's a minority view) than her solo work.

Basically, you can find good music in every era if you don't depend upon mainstream success as a marker of worthwhile music.

What my point was to Brenda when s/he posted that you were just getting old was that it was normal for someone when they turn, say, 30 to become critical of current music. It doesn't mean that all 30somethings are like that but it's not unusual to hear people of this age and older complain about how music wasn't as good as "back in the day". It's a cycle, IMO.

Are you referring to cafes like Starbucks where some people spend a good part (hours!) of their day? If so, whether it's there or other cafes, I don't recall them ever playing anything really mainstream so I don't get why the Billboard Hot 100 charts were posted on this thread. I'm assuming you know this but there's a whole genre of music called Coffeehouse and you can find online stations for it and they rarely play anything from the radio. If you're hearing 90's HITS at your cafes, then that's disappointing because you might as well just turn on the radio. A cafe/coffeehouse/lounge is the opportunity to set a mood and expose your laptop-lugging peeps to music that isn't Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Daughtry, Ne-Yo, Taylor Swift. If a cafe played that "stuff", I'd walk out immediately.

The short answer is 'yes'. Of all songs currently popular, maybe 20% of them are halfway good.

Yeah I got all that from your OP. I still say it's a crock. If it were it would be fine - since teens are no more - and often less - musically savvy than people in their 20s and 30s. There are as many teens who think that mainstream music is mostly weak. Moreover, that viewpoint does nothing to deal with ly looking at what's going on with the state of music. Does it suck more? If not, why are cafes in a college heavy city starting to avoid playing it?

Stock-in-trade of Jamaican music. Either that or just take the same tune and put new lyrics on it
