Group Assignements whinge thread.

I NEED SOMEWHERE TO RANT.

I'll let the quality of her work do the talking:

Quote:
"To analysis these indicators, it explores that the proposals can be effective for the site. Instead, it also will make much more benefits.. In evidence, the warming global climate is becoming an issue, which is aroused as to its importance. It has caused by releasing heat-trapping gases as humans power to our modern life. At AMCOR site, the energy and electric used release the heat to the surrounding environment. To act in this condition, the proposal of the educational park makes more positive influences on the warming global climate."
WHAT THHHEE FUUCCKK!?!?!?

I'm all for international students, but surely there is a point when the university realises that basic comprehension of english is required to go to an english university.

Not only that, but because she copy and pasted a large part of her work with out putting in any references our group is liable for stealing intelectual property, most probably going to fail the task and a very good chance I will now have to repeat the subject next year. We weren't even given the option of doing her part for her, becasue everybody in the group was required to do 1,500 words each.

Also with in this group assignement, one other girl was expected to visit the site by herself (for a guided tour). She ofcourse said she was happy to do it, then disapeared for 6 weeks until the week after the task was completed to say she had finally done her part. She made no attempt to contact us, never answered her phone or emails and hasn't attended one tute since the beginning of the course.

Annnnnd ofcourse there was a girl who had a friend recently pass away. So I was required to do her part for her, I was happy to help...but it just added to the whoolllle shit storm which is this failure of a group assignement.

/rant.

To analysis these indicators :spits:

I'm doing a group assignment at the moment, my group member sat there talking about her day while I did all the work. My god I wanted to kick up a shit, but it doesn't help...just had to grit my teeth and get on with it.

Group assignments are possibly the worst thing ever. Why can you never get a good group or...get a group that actually works?

Oh yeah I remember those days. So much stress In the end I always had to do everything, redo 3/4 of the essay, spellcheck, print, hand it in... Of course you had to put the name on the essay of all the members of the group, even though you've done 90% of the work.
Glad those days are over

Re: Group Assignements whinge thread.

With most of our major group assignments, we nominate % contribution of each member when we hand it in and the individual marks are adjusted accordingly.

And if your life were gold, how long do you think you'd stay living?

With group work I tend to turn into a dictator

I actually control everyone and everything, I should probably try and fix that but I a perfectionist and I don't want other people fucking up my grades! So I just tend to write everything for presentations and get the others to read it, better to be in situations when you don't chose your groups (for me anyway) so I can go off at people who aren't my friends.

A lot of profanities fly in my group work situations...all from me, of course.

Yes, group assignments suck. I always hated them. They kill efficiency. I've always enjoyed working by myself. As most have mentioned, one person usually ends up doing /revising all of the work anyway. That was almost always me.

However, one time when I was in college, my mother was terminally ill and my group didn't make me do a damn thing; they just put my name on it at the end. I made sure I was ready for the presentation / question and answer thing and got through that easily, but that was one time it worked for me in reverse. I still remember and appreciate that 20 years later.

Re: Group Assignements whinge thread.

Group works helps students learn to work with others who have different skills, experiences, and knowledge bases. You can really learn a lot from other students, if you open your mind to it.

I know I personally preferred to do everything myself (being intellectually egotistical in my youth), but when teaching, the instructor has to think about what students can gain by working with others. Some group work I've received has been spectacular, while other times mediocre. Basically, the largest percentage of the grade should not depend upon group work unless the field of study completely depends upon such group work.

As for other students in your group, just point out the problems and try to resolve them. The worst is when one in the group does absolutely nothing and perhaps doesn't even come to group meetings or discussions. That's a bigger problem than a student's problems with the language.

Re: Group Assignements whinge thread.

Urgh - group presentations are just an absolute nuisance. I had an assessed group presentation in one of my modules last year and I didn't even know who one person was until the morning of the presentation because he never turned up to any of the lectures or seminars and he never replied back to my e-mails. The other guy in my group wasn't much better either.

He came up with some bullshit excuse on the day of the presentation, saying his laptop got infected which was why his part wasn't that good but he obviously didn't realise I was behind him on the stairs on the way out because he was telling his friend how he made it all up.

I didn't mind group work. Because once we divided the work, I would never hesitate to tell my group members that I would inform the lecturer/tutor if they didn't pull their weight. I would also offer my help to those who weren't good on the subject.

In instances where I was the weaker one in terms of the subject matter, I would usually handle the not-so-intense bits. I would also do all the formatting, compiling, editing and collating, upon which I would complete the abstract and conclusion. And the powerpoint presentation.

In advertising, EVERYTHING is a group assignment. So it does prepare you for the real world. At least in some industries.

And sometimes you have to work with the same group for yeeeeeeeeaaaaaarrrrrssss. (Though actually even though I don't work with them any more I count at least two of my former Art Director partners as among my best friends).
