Tough Love: Britain Will Cut Aid to 'Anti-gay' Nations

The British Prime Minister has vowed to get tough on African countries with poor records on gay rights by slashing millions of pounds from their aid payments.

In a sign that Britain is no longer prepared to turn a blind eye to nations that victimize sections of society, David Cameron will tell African leaders they will receive funding "fines" if persecution of gays continues, the Daily Mail reports.

The UK government has already taken steps against Malawi, cutting aid by $30 million after two homosexuals who held an engagement ceremony were sentenced to 14 months hard labor. And payments could be cut further to the southern African nation, which has received $312 since 2008, if it proceeds with plans to bring in tough anti-lesbian laws.

I don't know what to think of this. It's good for the gay community but probably less fortunate for those that aren't involved in discrimination. It does say countries with poor record though, but that's kind of ambiguous.

Opinions?

I'm not really sure what good this will do, to be honest. Is this as far as it will go, or will Britain do more to educate Africans on sexual identity tolerance? I'm not convinced this will do anything except cause more problems in Africa. Ignorant, bigoted people might use this against gays.

I don't live in the UK so I dunno what the political issues are for people living there but I really like David Cameron for a variety of reason. Something I never thought I'd say about a Tory PM.

Re: Tough Love: Britain Will Cut Aid to 'Anti-gay' Nations

This is brilliant news really. Some african countries (Malawi, Uganda, Nigeria) are absolutely sickening in their treatment of homosexuals. Uganda was even trying to pass a law making sodomy punishable by the death penalty.. How can the UK conscionably keep giving money to these regimes when the UK is signed up to any number of international agreements to respect homosexuals human rights.

I dont really see it as a win for the gay community as such, its a win for common sense.

These countries can easily keep their aid by merely stopping active persecution of a group of their own citizens who are no threat whatsoever to them. Very simple.

Of even more significance, there's this little gap in Graf's resume the size of the hole in the ozone layer: It's called Monica Seles. Was Graf the best female player of all time? She wasn't even the best in the heart of her career.

This makes sense in theory, and I really wish it was this simple. As the thread poster said though, if the countries don't comply, than there are innocent people being affected.

I like the hard line stance, and I hope this works. Hopefully the said countries do stop poor treatment of homosexuals. I just worry what will happen to the innocent if they don't.

Foreign aid is completely misused anyway.

Is there any creature on earth as unfortunate as an ugly woman?

Ought to cut all foreign aid if I had my own way, enough people of our own in need.

Good news.

I refuse to visit any of these contries until they sort this issue out so good to see my government doing something about it.

Interesting that they are focusing on the African countries while giving the Muslim countries a pass. Gotta love neo-colonial petroleum-driven ethics.

Oh, gosh, I was just going to mention this discrepancy.

But I guess the difference is that Britain isn't actually giving the Muslim country financial aid, but I suppose buying the oil is an indirect financial extension.

Forcing the countries to go pro-gay isn't going to solve any of the internal conflicts or tension.

Come on now you understand exactly what the poster was saying. And it seems clear from the OP that this particular aid cut would not be targeting the likes of Morroco or Tunisia, but countries like Malawi, where the Muslim population is less than 15%.

Re: Tough Love: Britain Will Cut Aid to 'Anti-gay' Nations

Ridiculous, short-sighted and more than a little neo-colonial. It will make lots of people be even more anti-gay. Not to mention that the concept of ceasing "helping" people based on whether or not they accept your values isn't help, it's manipulation.

In the UK public sector bodies are not allowed to do business with - and their purchasing power is big business - companies who dont have equality policies in place, so this is a welcome extension of that policy. anything that gives out an anti-discriminatory message is welcome.
